I've only been here for about 3 months, but I can't help but comment on all
the "political" threads in this newsgroup. This is REC.BOATS. Post your
political opinions in alt.politics, or in one of the other 500 political
newsgroups. It's bad enough it gets posted here, but to reply only makes it
worse.

I know, I know... don't let the door hit my ass on the way out, huh? Well
don't worry. There are a dozen message boards on the web where I don't have
to filter through 10 messages to find one about boating.

Carol,

This isn't supposed to be entirely a spectator event.

The participants determine the character of the board.

Your boating related post would be welcome.

However, most people don't speak up because of ridicule from immature

You might as well set automatic filters to remove those few people
that incessantly post off topic. Filter out the "OT" posts and about
a dozen people and this *is* a boating newsgroup. If you have been
around long enough, you will have noticed that 95% of the OT posters
don't even own a boat, so there is nothing *on* topic going on in
their lives to post.... thus all of the way-out political blather.

You make some valid points, but I disagree with the above statment. ALL
newbies come in here expecting topics on boating. NO one expects to find
half of the content to be political. I don't want to change this group,
just change those that think this is alt.politics. If I would be
successful, I can guarantee you no other Newby would come in here wanting to
change it back to politics, or anything other than boating for that mater.
If this group were about nothing but sailing, I wouldn't have said a thing.
Though it wouldn't have met my expectations, it would still be ON topic.

It is what it is. If you don't like what's here, and can't modify

Harry, ever stop to think that most of the newbie whiners are exactly
that... NEW at boating. Most of them CAN'T donate any useful knowledge
until they gain some by "sucking down" some of the posts here. In addition,
if a newbie would "donate" information and it wasn't 100% correct, guys like
you would jump down their throat telling them what a stupid idiot they are.

I haven't been here long, but I can tell you that I have donated to this

There is nothing new under the sun, so they say. The same is true for
wrecked boats. Every boating subject has been hashed and rehashed a dozen
times. Therefore, if you need info, do a google search on the subject wanted
on rec.boats and read the results, therefore avoiding the remarks of a few
incredibly ignorant people.

Nothing wrong with that. Nobody was born knowing about boats, and
none of us know it all (I'm being humble here). There's lots of good
information available on rec.boats.

You're right, Gordon...I've been reading some of your recent
boating-oriented posts here and I found...well, I didn't find anything
of interest.

Yeah, that's the silliest part of his reactionary posturing. A Democrat
votes for mostly Democratic Party candidates at every level. A
Republican votes for only Republican candidates at every level. In the
last eight years, one wonders how many Democrats Bill has voted for...
My guess is he's voted straight GOP.

I've only been here for about 3 months, but I can't help but comment on all the
"political" threads in this newsgroup. This is REC.BOATS. Post your political
opinions in alt.politics, or in one of the other 500 political newsgroups.
It's bad enough it gets posted here, but to reply only makes it worse.

You might as well set automatic filters to remove those few people that
incessantly post off topic. Filter out the "OT" posts and about a dozen people
and this *is* a boating newsgroup. If you have been around long enough, you
will have noticed that 95% of the OT posters don't even own a boat, so there is
nothing *on* topic going on in their lives to post.... thus all of the way-out
political blather.

I do the exact opposite. I rarely read rec.boats - I just occasionally POST
(boating-related) messages here. Sometimes I read the replies to my posts. If I
have nothing to post, I don't read rec.boats.

Help us neophytes out please Lloyd - How do you set a filter for a
Google user group? How do I filter "OTs", anything with "Bush" in the
title, or anything from an individual, say "Harry Krause" for example?

I'm one of those lurkers that just happens to love boating and many things
related to boating... fishing, skiing, tubing, cruising, etc. I don't spend
time on big bodies of water, or any oceans (since I live in Wisconsin) but
we aren't called 'Lake Country' around here for nothing. I love having the
ability to trailer my boat to check out the many different bodies of water
around here. Anyway, that's my short intro. I'm just wondering if someone
has a filter that they could share that they have found works well enough to
not filter out a large part of the relevant content? Linux, Microsoft, etc.
Doesn't matter. I've got them all.

Thanks much!
Mark
