Default Help pricing boat for sale

I have a very unusual boat I want to sell and I'm trying to figure out what
its worth.
I got it two years ago in a trade. Its a 1990 Glastron SX17 Sierra. What
is unusual about it is that it is virtually brand new. The owner bought it
in 1990. He only used it about two months and unfortunately didn't winterize
it correctly. The block cracked and although it runs, it is not repairable.
He left it in his garage for about 12 years and finally decided he wouldn't
ever fix it so I traded him an old truck for it. I have the Boat, trailer
and all the accessories. EVERYTHING is virtually new and almost perfect, it
just got a few small nicks from stuff in the garage being moved around it.
It has the 3.0 litre Mercruiser engine and an Alpha One drive.
I believe an engine from Jasper would be around $1800.
One would only need to see this to know its only been in the water a few
times. What would you think I could sell something like this for?

Thanks for any input.

The age and boat make means alot. Plus the boat isn't exactly in the "Mako"
or "Grady White" class. A boat as you described would be worth $1500-2000 as
is. You said a new motor is about $1800. The installation would be almost as
much. So you figure you can then sell it for 6-7K. Take a look on ebay or
boat trader online. I think you will find out that you are better off
selling it as is. Unless you plan to do all the work yourself. I have
rebuilt blown engines for under $1000. You can probably salvage 90 percent
of what you have now.

Definitely planning on selling it as is. I have a boat and I don't have the
time or a lift to change the engine. I did get a service manual for it
though and it don't look like it would be real tough to change the engine if
I had a lift. Its a shame, it runs great but I just cant stop the water
from leaking from the block. ::sigh::

With a clear title, I'd be inclined to offer $1000 cash. Need pics, of
course. I'm in the Southern Illinois area (near St. Louis MO)

I would guess for around $500. A better solution might be to donate it to a
local charity which could realize some benefit from a pretty undesireable
boat in need of major work at high cost. You might even get a write off for
it. IMO, if your truck was operational you didn't make a great deal.

That always sounds like a better solution than it is. As a guy who worked the
"boat donation" end of things for a while, I can say that most non-profits
don't want a junk boat any more than anybody else. Lots of folks give up trying
to sell a trashed out boat, car, or what not and decide that they will be doing
humanity a favor by graciously donating the worthless hulk to the local
charity.

I donated a 21 year old SeaRay Sundancer 24 with it's galvanized tandem
trailer to our local Volunteer Fire Department. It was fully operational
and decently equipped. The upholstry was rough but servicable. The gel
coat was faded badly and the outdrive was pretty well pitted but in good
operating condition. The value in 1999 was what ever you could get. As I'd
just bought a new Whaler I needed to get rid of the SeaRay. Plus I was
getting nagged by the distaff side.

The VFD accepted the boat and was very glad to get it. They advertised the
boat in the paper and that it would be sold at absolute auction.

They got a handful of bids the best of which was about $4500. They were
pretty happy with the outcome and so was I.

From the description of the Glastron under discussion I'd guess it would
move under the same conditions but perhaps for a bit less money. IMO, as
the boat needed a new or serviceable block a decent mechanic could have had
a good boat for a small investment in time and money. OTOH, maybe my
suggestion sucked. But, if a nonprofit has no use for a donation they are
free to say so.
