Hi,
I recently came into possession of a 1968 Mercury 39 3.9 hp outboard. I've never owned an outboard before, this is a kicker for my sailboat. I was hoping someone on here coudl help me with some questions and problems I'm having. First, how does the stinking engine cover come off! Is this a big secret? Nothing on Google or Dejanews showed up in a search. I even bought the repair manual for the engine and it doesn't say how to get to the innards. I'm not an idiot (comparitively speaking) but this has me stumped. The engine has been sitting in my garage for the last 3 months. Is there any specific procedure I should follow before starting it up? Starting fluid, gumout in the carb, oil in the cylinder, that kind of thing. Finally, does anyone know what kind of fitting goes on the fuel inlet nozzle? I picked up a fitting specifically for a mercury outboard but the outside diameter is too big to fit into the recessed hole where the inlet valve is. Any help, information, or tips would be greatly appreciated! Thank you! Best Regards, Mike |
