ocean going motoryacht

Hi folks,

I have a few questions.

How much does an ocean going motoryacht cost? Something that will take you
from Boston to London. Is a ballpark number possible for
such a motoryacht? Is it 500K, 5 mil or somewhere in between?

Does such a motoryacht require a crew?

I did some google searches but could not find an answer. Probably not asking
the right questions.

Go to Yachtworld.com and run a search for some 50-foot Krogens. IMO, that
represents the minimum type of vessel that one should consider for transoceanic
crossings in a powerboat. Pricing will be evident.

When conditions are favorable or ideal, a smaller boat would suffice, but don't
count on conditions always being ideal or favorable.

One of the mfgrs just did a circumnavigation in a 40-foot trawler, and admitted
it was something of a stunt.

Yeah, yeah, you're going to hear about the guys who went from LeHavre to Nassau
on a tea crate, etc.......but just because some other fool went over Niagara
Falls in a barrel doesn't mean everybody with an empty barrel should try their
luck.

Depends on how crafty you are. You could put together a passagemaking
motorboat for much less, but obviously the comforts are the first thing
to go if you scrimp to gain ocean crossing capability.

Nope. But you'd probably be better off with one.

??!? Oh c'mon, a forty footer made a circumnavigation. It would be
easily possible to install the fuel tanks to get that much range on many
35 footers. In this case however IMHO bigger is better. Some decades ago
I crossed the ocean a couple times on a U.S. Navy destroyer... and
decided it would be better to take an aircraft carrier...

But you're right that no planing craft is going to have anything close
to the range required... doesn't that make a statement about planing vs
fuel efficiency?

In reality you are going to need at least 4 people to handle a large
boat and maintain a proper shift of watches.

An important point. Autopilots & radar alarms are a given, but there
needs to be a qualified person awake & alert on the bridge.

It is possible to do a circumnavigation in hops of less than 1500nm,
for example the atlantic can be crossed via Bermuda and the Azores
or Greenland and Iceland.
The original question implied a direct Boston - UK nonstop crossing
which is rather a different question. The fuel required is rather
too heavy for a small boat B-).

It turns out that there are 18 trawlers going trans atlantic as we
speak. They left Ft Lauderdale earlier in the week and are crossing
by way of Bermuda and the Azores. The longest leg is Bermuda to the
Azores at about 1800 NM.

Very interesting - it seems that Nordhavns are rather popular in
the USA, they are in the process of opening a sales office in the UK
so I will pay them a visit at the Southampton show,

The northern route is shorter, but more prone to bad weather and
certainly colder than the Azores route.
