I'd consider getting a small ditty bag of hand held instruments. A VHF
and GPS and even a depthsounder, maybe a bearing compass. That way you
don't have to cut holes in the boat, introduce the problem of boat
wiring & battery power, and you can take them with you on other
occasions off the boat, and you can upgrade them much more easily.

Also I'd consider mounting a compass, probably one of the mast mounts.
