Why are oil filter numbers so secret ??
 
Fricking Merc Cruiser manual..... Big ole manual came
with my new 2005 Bayliner capi 3.0/A-1 right ? Full of
good information, EXCEPT for oil filter. They tell you
how to change oil, part number for oil etc, yada, yada.
But they don't say BOO about the fricken oil filter P/N.
So why the hell do they DO that ? Why is this so secret ?
I'd be happy with a merc 35-xxxx number, but nooooo.
So in plain ole "auto-eese", what is the filter for a 3.0L ?
PH2, PH3, PH47 ??? I mean, it IS a Chevy, right ??

The second link has tons on info yes, but most
of the filters shown all say "filter effeciency unknown".
So, what IS the standard filter number for the 3.0L ?
Since the 3.0L is pretty much a GM Chevy 181 CID,
I would think that its a garden verity PH1, PH2, PH3, no ?
I also find it odd that the oil filter is all secret-secret,
but yet they don't use AIR filters! Yea, you are on the
water and there is typically no road dust etc., but on my
new 2005 Bayliner 175 Capri, I'm seeing a lot of real
fine white fiberglass dust all over the engine. I reckon
this is left over sanding dust left over from manufacturing.

But thanks for that info - I'll take the time to read all
of the info in the second link.

I just tried both links and they work for me.

Use any high quality filter that you chose. The main difference between auto
and marine are that marine filters have a more corrosion resistant finish.
As any boat mechanic will tell you, that many engines are destroyed by a
rusted thru oil filter that decides to let go at the most inoportune moment.
If you inspect and change them often, you should be OK

I have used Fram, AC, Autolite, etc for the last 20 years on my engines and
never hhad a failure.

WHAT is the regular over the counter number
for a Merc 3.0L GM 181 CID ?? PH-"WHAT" ?

Rusted from the OUTside ? yer kidding.. I can't imagine that.
So the orange paint on a Fram filter will rust ? hum, must be a
salt thing, cause the orange Fram, or the yellow Penzoil filter I
have on my trucks, and outdoor equipment never ever rusted.
Worse case, just hit the orange Fram with a coat of gloss black
Krylon, and should be pretty much tthe same thing, no ?

If it's a remote oil filter, it's PH-51A, if it's the long filter it's
PH-29.
