'Wing' canoe paddles?
Just wondering, given that 'wing' kayak paddles are meant to have improved
the speed of sprint kayakers by 2%, has anyone ever cut a wing kayak paddle in half, put grips onto the shafts and gone out in a tandem canoe? Clearly, canoe paddlers need to be able to apply a great variety of strokes, including cross deck strokes, and the 'slicey' nature of a wing paddle makes it difficult / impossible to scull with them, use Duffek technique etc. Also, wing blades need to move sideways with every stroke for maximum effect, and that may introduce a turning momentum in a tandem canoe, as bow and stern paddlers have different leverage, and correction strokes are again impossible with a 'wing'. Anyways, given how intense some canoe racers are, and keen to shave the odd second off here and there, I was wondering if it has ever been tried? Maybe with different size wings fore and aft? C. |
