Default Tax on boat in NC

North Carolina charges property tax on cars and boats as well as real
estate. I am trying to find out how the tax works if the boat is kept in a
different county from your residence. Do you pay tax to your county of
residence anyway? To the county where the boat is kept? Does the official
home port of the boat (as lettered on the transom) make any difference?

They also charge a "use tax" on the purchase of a boat, which is capped
at $1500 IIRC... please don't rely on this info, call the state Dept of
Revenue.

It depends on where you keep the boat... in a place of commercial
storage, such as a marina or storage lot, or whether you keep it behind
a friend's garage.

We keep our boat in a marina, and all boats in all marinas (in all
states AFAIK, not just NC) are reported on local & state tax rolls. We
pay property tax on the boat to the county where the marina is, and
forward a copy of the tax form for that county to our county of residence.

It's too damn complicated, but until we have another Bastille Day, what
can one do?
