For ball park starting point, check www.iboats.com and go from there. Of
course, your best bet is a locally owned, well maintained, low hours motor
being sold by someone who doesn't really know the value 8-), but that
website will give you a frame of reference.

I would get a newer 40hp (less than10 years old) which is rated at the
propeller shaft, not the power head, so it is really something like an old
50hp?

I think your boat is rated for 40hp max. and a 50hp might be too heavy on
the rear?

I was thinking the same thing.. even the 40 sometimes seems a bit heavy..
A few good waves along the bay from other boats is scary. It has a
cut out along the back of the boat too.. sorta looks like
this... ---\___/---


water comes in ^ with any good size wave.

It will be somewhat difficult to find a 50hp, or even a 40hp engine in
the 15" shaft length your boat requires.

I think you will find that a 1976 or newer 35hp Johnson/Evinrude will
outperform your old 40 in speed, economy, and reliability. A 2 cylinder
looper(made in 40,45,50,55, & 60 hp versions) is physically smaller but
will weigh only a little more than your old 40hp, especially the 1975 &
newer with the smaller gearcase, but the 15" shaft wasn't very common as
even smaller boats were being built deeper into the '80's & '90s.
Recently, the largest 15" outboard available was a version of the
Mercury 50hp, and this was a "Bigfoot" model, I recall.
