Default New Jersey nj boat register

Hi Folks:
I've had this 8 ft aluminum boat for about 15 years (since I was a
youngun') and was recently thinking of putting a trolling motor on it
(since I found one real cheap). It looks like this might be more
trouble than it's worth. The boat is at least as old as 1962. I
scraped up a rusty tag that says "VIO HOLDA MFG. CO. INC. TOPEKA,
KANSAS NO.6"
That's the only thing, other than a big plate that says "DEPT.
FOREST&WATERS PENNA.1962" I see no capacity plate, and I have no
paperwork. Is this going to be a nightmare registering to only put a
trolling motor on it?

Any help/advice appreciated
Harry

Just a bit of leg work involved.

Call the NJ State Marine Police, such as their offices on the Point
Pleasant Canal, and tell them you need to get a HIN (Hull Identification
Number) for your boat. They have a procedure for doing this which
involves taking the boat to them and filling out some paperwork. A
marine police officer will eyeball the boat to verify that it doesn't
have a HIN, or that the HIN was not removed, and they will then issue
you a HIN sticker to put on the boat, and provide the paperwork
necessary to register the boat with MVS.

Most smaller boats the age of yours didn't have a HIN. I've done this
with both a rowboat and a dingy of your vintage.

Hi Brad:
Thanks for the info! I put a bigger boat through a much rougher
process (one I bought in PA). It's encouraging to hear it won't be as
much trouble.
