More places to launch boat
State officials say a program designed to increase launch points on waterways will make it easier for people to paddle their canoes and kayaks on Ohio's rivers and streams. The Kokosing River in Knox County, about 40 miles northeast of Columbus, became Ohio's first official water trail June 4. Nine new staging areas are planned for the river's 28-mile stretch in Knox. State officials developed the water trail program because of an increase in boat registrations, particularly hand-powered ones, said Phil Miller, planning administrator for the Ohio Department of Natural Resources' Watercraft Division. The number of new registrations for canoes and kayaks in Ohio increased 40 percent between 1998 and 2004, according to department statistics. A few waterways could be designated each year, according to the department, and local organizations and groups are expected to maintain the launch points. http://news.enquirer.com/apps/pbcs.d...506200345/1056 |
