Dumb question about zincs

I understand the basic principles of the sacrificial zincs on my outdrive.
Just one question as I replace them for this season: are they supposed to
make a good electrical connection to the surface they are mounted on or
should they be isolated? Or does it matter either way? Thanks, Gil

Most definitely, good electrical contact. If they're isolated, they're just
paper weights. I scrape the area under the zinc to bare metal.

AND for God's sake, DON'T paint 'em!
Also there is a difference in "zincs" for salt water and fresh water use. Salt
requires a real zinc "zinc", fresh needs an alum. alloy "zinc", though if the
boat is kept on a trailer it may not be an issue for you, check with other
boaters in your area.
Best wishes
Mike

If you understand zincs, you wouldn't be asking the question. Yes, there
has to be a good connection. Clean the surface before attaching.
