Default 1984 OMC Stringer 800

I replaced the shift cable and now forward is reverse and vice versa, so
now I need advice on the proper way to set up the shift. Thanks

There are 2 very similar looking styles of shift cables, and they work in
opposite directions. The hydraulic shifted 1978 to '81 or '82 use a
different cable than the later models that have a fully mechanical shift
design. I believe the late model cable has 2 grooves on the engine end to
distinguish it from the older style cable.

A 1984 cable should be part number 982563. Check your stern drive model
number to make sure you ordered the correct cable.

If you are talking about the shift cable from the control box back to the
motor, then you probably installed it in the control box incorrectly.
