Perch and Walleye Report for Lake Erie
Looks like I have to hitch a ride for some walleye fishing this spring:
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ "We are now realizing the benefits of very conservative harvests on lake-wide walleye fisheries over the past four years," said Steven A. Gray, chief of the ODNR Division of Wildlife. "The interagency effort to address population declines in this popular game fish has paid off and now we are seeing the greatest numbers of Lake Erie walleye since 1990." Ohio's yellow perch quota is 5.4 million pounds of the lake-wide TAC of 11.8 million pounds. That amount is similar to last year's quota of 5.1 million pounds. "The yellow perch population is healthy and we are expecting another year of fantastic perch fishing on Lake Erie," said Gray. The daily bag limit for walleye between March 1 and April 30 is three fish, increasing to six fish from May 1 through Feb. 28, 2006. A minimum length of 15 inches per walleye also remains in effect year round. The daily bag limit for yellow perch is 30 fish year round with no size limit. http://www.thefishwrapper.com/news/s...s/2127914.html ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ++ Walleye is fun to catch and delicious.....yellow perch is even better in both categories. |

We have an annual fishing trip to Lake Cumberland or Lake Center Hill, and meet friends there from the Cleveland area, where my neighbor used to live. One of the meals I look forward to on the houseboat is fried Lake Erie perch. I don't think I've had anything better than those little morsels! |

Jim, one of the guys from Ohio makes a dish that is very good, wonder if you've ever heard of it: He fries some cabbage in butter with onion, gets it kind of browned and carmelized, and adds this to cooked noodles. It is MUCH better than you'd think. I want to learn how to do that. Sounds yummy. We dip the fish in flour, then and egg/milk mixture, then seasoned bread crumbs, then fry them in oil. We have always tried to duplicate the perch recipe from the Village Pump http://www.villagepump.com/ on Kelleys Island....we finally got the recipe when we jumped over there on my friends boat a couple of weeks ago.....no egg, milk or flour....just a dip in some specialty breading and frying them in oil. BTW: If you ever get a chance to get up to the Islands for a fishing trip, make it a point to head over to the Village Pump. Nothing beats their perch basket washed down with brandy alexanders. We are vacationing on the island in a lake front house for the week this summer. My friend's family is coming with us , along with his newly restored 26 foot Lyman. We are supplying the house and he is supplying the boat. I can't wait. ;-) |

I'm going to see my friends in Lorain, and Vermillion in July, and am compiling a list of things to do (besides perch and walleye fish!). Last time there, I had a good time going to these little clubs that were around. It seems that all nationalities had their own club, The Chek club, etc. Went to a Polish one and had the best damned food ever! |
