Force Help Please?
 
Hi,

I am a first time poster to this NG. I have a few questions that I
hope some of you will have experience with. Here goes:

1. I recently bought a 1984 Force 85 HP. I just had the lower unit
replaced and it seems to work ok but I am concerned about a growling
sound that it makes. Do you have any idea what the sound may be?

2. When running at half throttle or so and then accelerating to full
throttle the engine dies. If I use the throttle handle like a gas
pedal and "pump it" it will continue running and accelerate on to full
speed. Something about this sound really wrong. Also when pushing
the throttle to full as I described, the engine sounds as though it is
not getting fuel.

3. Does anyone know the correct fuel air mixture adjustment? My
manual tells me an initial adjustment but doesn't go any further into
it. I know that elevation is a factor but thought I would see what
you all say.

4. When at idle, when I put the engine into gear it will die alot of
the time.

Any help would be great.

Not sure of the mixture screw setting but
1. Have the lower unit checked by whoever did the work. Definitely does
not sound right.
2. Adjust the idle setting for idle in gear at 700 rpms. This will
eliminate the stalling when shifting into gear.
3. As for the acceleration problem, make sure the fuel tank vent is clear,
if so, I would think it may be time for a complete carb rebuild by a pro.

Rog,

Follow Tony's advice!!! I don't know anything about that motor but
at 85 hp you must have more than one carb, and not only do they need to
be sync'd when properely adjusted, they NEED to be giving you the fuel
flow. 2 strokes can't really handle a lack of fuel without trashing
the engine! I got a GREAT deal on a set of carbs for my motor off of
ebay last year. As soon as I pulled apart the lower carb of the pair,
I knew what happened to the engine it came from. The lower carb had
the float adjusted at a 45 degrees instead of at the normal 'level'
In this case I'm sure the lower cylinder burned up since there was
never enough fuel going through that carb. If you're handy, you can
rebuild them yourself, that is, if they need to be rebuilt, and you can
disassemble and clean them up if not. Oh, and if you don't already
have a service manual for that motor, get one. Some say they are
worth their weight in gold. Sometimes I think they're worth a lot
more than that!

The poor accelleration could really could be as simple as gummed up
carbs from the motor sitting too long if you don't know it's history.
Or could be a bad backyard mechanic. Either way, definitly check it
out.

Thankks Guys,

I am able to do most of my own "backyard mechanics" as you call them.
And I appreciate your advice. I think if your not a bit handy with a
wrench in your hand, then you shouldn't own a boat! I will check those
into those things guys. I do have a manual and it seems to be a
pretty good one so far. I appreciate your help.

Hey Rog, I just bought a 84 Bayliner with a Force 85 also. We just came
back from our shakedown cruise. Our boat didn't run right at first, but
ran good for half a tank after the first initial few minutes - then ran
poorly back to the ramp. I'll look into the carbs tonight. But I'm glad
to see someone with a motor like mine, post what ya find out!
