I have recently purchased a second hand boat fitted with a 100hp Mercury
outboard. Can someone please tell me how to find out the year the motor was
built, as I want to purchase a manual and don't want to be stuck with one
for an incorrect year or model.

Get the serial number off the motor and out drive. Also what year is the
vessel? You didnt give us much to work with.

Give the serial number to a dealer and he can look it up.

It was either 62-65 or 68-69 (assuming a 6 cylinder)
