A good NG gone bad

I have been participating in this NG on and off for about 8 years. My
political leanings have been and will continue to be my own business.
With over 40 years experience as a boater and almost as many years in
the marine business, there have been times that I felt that I had
something of value to contribute.
Hopefully some of my posts have proved useful.
In my opinion, this group is out of control, at least as far as
providing useful information is concerned. The NG has changed - and not
for the good.
But, the majority rules; apparently political comments are now the
expected norm. What a shame.

Good luck and good boating,
Jim

I agree with your comments, the proportion of OT posts is now very high.
But, you have to acknowledge that people post OT because they get a
response. They are political people, who may not be boat people, who see
this forum as an audience for their beliefs. Not to be rude, but your
comments are expressed often, and nothing comes of them. Put the political
posters on ignore, or kill file, or block: Lose the losers!

I couldn't agree more.
We've lost a lot of good people due to infighting, ot posts, and politicts.
I for one, like giving helpful advice to fellow boaters.
I do get a bit "gun shy" on giving advice or opinions that are going to get
argumets
from people who just love the conflict.
Let's clean up this group and we could cut the number of posts in half.

Maybe I'll stay this time.

I wish it was easy to get rid of these no-life (and likely no boat!)
puke-heads, but it seems like these lame-ass wannabe armchair politicians
are more interested in seeing their posts and keeping off-topic **** stirred
up, than in EVER contributing anything boating related.
I frequent a lot of newsgroups and am just amazed at the number of off-topic
posts by these LOSERS in rec.boats!
Listen up, you friggin' azz-wipes.....we really DON'T care about your
off-topic ramblings, so why the HELL don't you go and create your own little
cozy newsgroup where you can endlessly debate your bull****?
God....o/t posters are SUCH pieces of ****......

Capt. Bill needs to because a boater and a captain, instead of an "nothing to
do" ot poster.

We ( the boaters) are wanting to save this group, all you do bill is try and
distroy it with you high school OT postings and irrevelent worthless banter.

Your only way of contributing to this group it to try to upset posters and
chase people away.

What a cheap claim to fame, but then, you did earn it.

Man, I really don't like you at all.

In real life , you can't possibly be that much of a jerk, but then, mabe you
could bill.

Where do you get those filters that cut out the sphinters??

Hi Carl,

About all we can do is bob along in the stream of verbal pollution and
keep our heads above the slime. Ignore any flames, and immediately add the
sender to the killfile.

I have cut down on SO many posts by ignoramuses (that probably don't even
own a boat,) that I am only loading 100 messages a day.

You are most welcome to discuss anything about boats.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you are using Outlook Express as a news reader:
Click
"TOOLS" "Message Rules" News Rules
check box \"when the message subject line contains"
check box\"delete it"
add words "O.T. OT ot off topic"
This will eliminate most off topic posts.
For the senders that can't or won't use OT on their posts, simply add to
blocked sender list. Do the same with flamers.
Yup, since I took Lee's advice and filter "subject: ot or bush"
Clueless response from one of the kings of OT posts about OT posts.
Want to compare the number of OT posts started by you to the number started by
me in the last year?
(sound of crickets)
Didn't think so.
We ( the boaters) are wanting to save this group, all you do bill is try and
If it's so irrevelent and worthless, then why do you keep responding to it? :-)
Yeah, getting shone up as a hypocrite can sting a bit.
But I would still buy you that beer we talked about once. :-)
Where do you get those filters that cut out the sphinters??
You'll never use them. You like this OT stuff to much. :-)
But while you're at it, look into spell check.
Take it from someone who knows, it's worth using.
And here's some good news for you Sterling.
Starting around the begining of next week I will be gone for about three weeks
running/delivering a couple of boats.
First a new Broward down through the Exumas and then a custom built in NZ
trawler from Walkers to Savannah GA.
So you can be as big a hypocite as you want for a while with no fear of anybody
calling you on it.
At least till I get back or find an Internet cafe. :-)
Jim,
I share your concern over the direction this NG has taken over the past
few years. I have gleaned so much good information from this group, and
contributed my 2 cents worth when I could. More often than not, when I
found something that was within my realm of expertise, the answer I was
contemplating had already been posted.
I use filters to block out most of the off-topic garbage. There are 5
people who I block who offer nothing of value here, along with messages
that contain "OT" or variations thereof. I've been playing with a few
other filters, but these seem to catch most of the non-boating related
garbage.
The only way I can think of to minimize the off-topic postings is the
same solution to preventing SPAM emails: Don't respond! Just as with
SPAM, if no one responds, it will mostly go away!
Have a great boating season! My spring preps will be completed this
weekend, but before you know it, I'll be starting the winterization
process again...
I'm sooo confused!
Why not just ignore the people and subjects you have NO interest in? Why
make such a BIG deal of this? GET A LIFE!!! There are far more
important things to bitch about.
I don't see anybody making a "big deal" about it, other than the fact that
those who post OT are being very rude and inconsiderate.
