Default paint the seats?

Hi there,

I've got a boat I'm restoring, and it has the old 70's era vinyl seats. I
was wondering if there was any kind of paint ( spray paint ) that I could
use on them to change the colour. Obviously my guess is that it would have
to be flexible enough, and not come off especially when you sit on it with
nothing but swimming trunks.

Is it possible, or is this something that just doesn't get done?

Cheers to all those who reply.

JC Whitney has '70s-era boat seat sets cheap. Just replace 'em.

Chris - search here and go to the forums at iboats.com and search on
vinyl, dye, paint, etc. You'll find quite a few posts from people who
ave done this. Evidently there's spray dye for vinyl that actually
soaks into the material (with proper prep) and thus stands up to
flexing, etc.. Some companies actually make a spray prep substance
that makes the dye soak in better. I've read on that forum several
accounts of durable, good results. It might be worth a try. Also
search the same terms on the net to see the products available. Good
luck and post what results you have.

Back when vinyl seats were common, we used to have itinerant tradesmen
working up and down the auto rows doing patching and "dye" jobs.

Any dye job I ever saw done on a vinyl seat looked a lot like spray
painting-at least to me. :-)
