Baffle in the Exhaust (also Ping DAVE HALL...)
 

A week or so ago I asked about muffeling the exhaust on my boat.

One person (Dave) suggested:

You might be able to simply slide a baffle into the exhaust outlet.
They are good for taking the rasp out of the exhaust note and they are
simple to install (and remove if desired).

I've looked around a bit but haven't found any such devices. (Not in-line
mufflers, but baffles that can just be "inserted" into the exhaust outlet.

Anyone know where to find information on these?

At the boat dealer the other day, I saw a fiberglass muffler system in a
tournament ski boat. Was transverse to the boat, so fot behind the engine.

I bought a set of them 9 years ago to take the edge off of the "bark"
of my exhaust note. I forget where I got them from, but it was a
company who advertized in the back of one of my boating magazines.

Basically it's a slide in "basket" with slots which attaches to the
protruding lip of the exhaust pipe with a single bolt and nut (if your
exhaust outlet is flush to the transom, you might have a problem).
They make them for 3" and 4" diameter pipes. I had to grind a slight
amount off of mine to allow them to slide in smoothly.

I'll look at my magazines and see if I can find the company again.

Our exhauts pipe is 3" and does extend beyond the transom (is not
flush with it) so these sound (or don't sound) like just the thing for
us.

A google search of
marine exhaust slip in
turns up a number of candidates including rex marine which is where I got my
4" ones. They are pretty common.

Here are some for a Mustang, perhaps will give you ideas, although this
is a bypass, as opposed to something adjustable inline.
