Gabriele Polo, the editor of Il Manifesto newspaper, said Sgrena's car was fired on as it made its way to Baghdad airport. What Reuters conveniently omits....... (from CNN) ....According to a multinational forces statement, the car approached the checkpoint at high speed about 9 p.m. (1 p.m. ET) U.S. troops "attempted to warn the driver to stop by hand and arm signals, flashing white lights, and firing warning shots in front of the car," the statement said. "When the driver didn't stop, the soldiers shot into the engine block, which stopped the vehicle, killing one and wounding two others." In other words, US or other coalition forces used the same checkpoint procedures that have been in force in Iraq for a long, long time. Anyone..... anyone..... who approaches a military checkpoint in Iraq at night and fails to heed warnings is a silly damned fool, among other things, and must bear a large share of responsibility for ensuing events. Why am I not surprised? The days of reporting the *news* is long gone....it is all now filtered and bleached and results in nothing more than an editorial...certainly not news. |

"Harry Krause" wrote in message ... Sorry, but I usually don't accept statements of explanation from US military sources in the absence of independent verification. The military lies a lot. We've had example after example of this in Iraq. That's why we don't believe *anything* you post. You're more biased and more of a liar than the military. An edited "news" story from Harry. Of course... |

John H "All decisions are the result of binary thinking." I'm sorry, John, but I live in a reality-based world, and that means I discount the US military's "explanations" for its screw-ups. The news here was that our military once again opened fire when it shouldn't have. You believe the military's explanation, I don't. You do not stop for a checkpoint with a bunch of armed men, and you think they won't shoot. You drinking from the same source as basskisser? |
