When I retire, in 17 years, I will be heading to Eastern North Carolina.

Gainesville was the only city in Florida to make the list. If you've ever
been to Gainsville, you realize that it's a flawed list.

"Naples is an exceptional place.and affordable to a lot of people. With its
lovely white sand beaches, cultural and recreational amenities, excellent
shopping, and uniquely attractive historic neighborhoods, Naples can be
expected to remain the premier community of Collier County."
Warren Bland, author of "Retire in Style"

Naples scored 32nd on the list. The high cost of living knocked it down a
bunch.

Naples Ranked as One of the Top 50 U.S. Cities for Retirement

In his book, "Retire in Style," Warren R. Bland ranked Naples 32nd in
the nation and among three Florida cities chose as the best areas for
retirement.

Bland, a California State University geography professor, took several
years to research his list of the top 50 retirement towns, extensively
traveling around the country and the state of Florida to analyze a variety
of factors including: landscaping, climate, quality of life, cost of living,
transportation, retail services, community services, recreational
activities, cultural/educational activities, work/volunteer activities,
crime rate and public safety.

Naples earned a top score of five for its recreational activities and
retail services and low scores in the cost of living and transportation.
According to Bland, when he visited Naples two years ago, the current public
transportation system was not yet running, contributing to his low
transportation ranking.

Although Bland indicates Naples' cost of living is higher than many
retirement towns, he also feels Naples is worth it.

"It's an exceptional place. Let's face it, Naples is affordable to a
lot of people." said Bland.

Uhhh - warped list. First off you have to decide how important climate
is...and it ain't the same as the other factors. If you can't grow palm
trees half the populaton balks.

Then Boulder City, NV as a retirement destination? You gotta be kidding.
You need to be borderline wealthy to even live there. For those of you who
don't know virtually all the available land around Boulder City is owned by
the City...and they don't sell very much of it. Right out of one of the
1960 TV family shows.

A wonderful place Boulder City...but if they take in 25 retirees a year I
would be amazed. Three million or so net worth I would think...not a
retirement destination.

Jim Donohue...who sells a lot of retirees homes. .

If you want to be decently warm in the winter, below Orlando is just
about mandatory. And you really can't beat the boating in south
Florida.

Halifax could have rated higher except for the climate and crime???
Seems some people don't like the "severe four season weather" and as for
crime...it's a major seaport and naval base. Gotta be a few shady people
lurking around.
