Gainesville was the only city in Florida to make the list. If you've ever
been to Gainsville, you realize that it's a flawed list.

Naples scored 32nd on the list. The high cost of living knocked it down a
bunch.

Naples Ranked as One of the Top 50 U.S. Cities for Retirement

In his book, "Retire in Style," Warren R. Bland ranked Naples 32nd in
the nation and among three Florida cities chose as the best areas for
retirement.

Bland, a California State University geography professor, took several
years to research his list of the top 50 retirement towns, extensively
traveling around the country and the state of Florida to analyze a variety
of factors including: landscaping, climate, quality of life, cost of living,
transportation, retail services, community services, recreational
activities, cultural/educational activities, work/volunteer activities,
crime rate and public safety.

Naples earned a top score of five for its recreational activities and
retail services and low scores in the cost of living and transportation.
According to Bland, when he visited Naples two years ago, the current public
transportation system was not yet running, contributing to his low
transportation ranking.

Although Bland indicates Naples' cost of living is higher than many
retirement towns, he also feels Naples is worth it.

"It's an exceptional place. Let's face it, Naples is affordable to a
lot of people." said Bland.

Jim Donohue February 22nd 05 02:50 AM

Uhhh - warped list. First off you have to decide how important climate
is...and it ain't the same as the other factors. If you can't grow palm
trees half the populaton balks.

Then Boulder City, NV as a retirement destination? You gotta be kidding.
You need to be borderline wealthy to even live there. For those of you who
don't know virtually all the available land around Boulder City is owned by
the City...and they don't sell very much of it. Right out of one of the
1960 TV family shows.

A wonderful place Boulder City...but if they take in 25 retirees a year I
would be amazed. Three million or so net worth I would think...not a
retirement destination.

We putted across the sound to grab a bit of lunch yesterday. Enroute, I
noticed my newly installed depth sounder was reporting a temperature of
48 F. A walloping 16 degrees warmer than ice. Nobody goes swimming, in
the traditional sense, in water that cold for more than a short period
of time and lives to tell about it.

Personally, I can swim very well if I must but I prefer to cross the
water above the surface.

As far as summer goes up here......think of a gorgeous spring day in
MD. Not so miserably hot that one has to plan how to run from the
air-conditioned house to the air-conditioned car with the least
discomfort, but a balmy 75-80 degree sunny day with just a hint of a
slight breeze. String three such days together, and you've just had
"summer" in the NW. :-)

FYI, that's around 10 degrees WARMER than typical winter ocean temps when
I used to live on Long Island, NY.

You forgot, "just finished raining. again"

We're having an El Nino year up this way. Normally, we have nine inches
of rain by the end of February. So far this year we have had five. I
think most of that fell during 2-3 days of the boat show. Where did the
rain go? Down to "sunny" southern California, where Los Angeles has had
18-inches of rain so far in 2005, twice what Seattle gets in the same
period in a "normal" year
and many many times the few inches that LA would normally receive in
Jan/Feb.

The increased number of manatee zones have really put a damper on the
boating in certain parts of the state. So far Collier County hasn't been
affected too badly. On the intracoastal waters, we have 30 mph manatee
speed zones...and idle zones when outside of the channel. Some areas are
idle speed all of the time. I have a 1.6 mile run at idle to get to the
gulf from my house. It's not too bad, since I'm boating in open waters in
just 15 minutes (17 minutes on an incoming tide).

There are a lot of folks up the Caloosahatchee, Estero, Imperial, and
Cocohatchee rivers that have 30-90 minute runs to the gulf because of the
increased number of zones. When they bought their houses just a few years
ago, they had only a 15-30 minute run. Some of them can't get out at all on
low tide because they draft too much when off plane. Boating in Florida
isn't what it used to be (and I've only been here 6 years!).

hey NOYB...
see attached... http://www.hfxnews.com/

A book has been printed listing the top 60 places to retire in North
America, and according to the author's criteria Halifax rates among
the top
ten.. no word if Naples even made the list.

Nevada wouldn't be on my list if they were giving million-dollar houses
away. Neither would Mississippi, Texas, or Alabama. Or Florida below
Orlando in latitude.

Actually Harry you sometimes don't pay attention. Southern Nevada did
not go for Bush. And eventually the south will rule.

That's not my criteria.

For old bodies 6 months in Vegas is better than anywhere in Florida.

I'm going out to Vegas for one day next week. I could have left here today
and stayed there through next week Saturday, but one day is more than
enough for me.

Why that is too bad...The food alone is worth a week or so. The
entertainment, while not intellectually challenging, is unique and
enjoyable. Much more interesting town since it discovered the money in
things other than gaming.

I personally prefer it as a place to live. I would think it less desireable
if one was raising children...weak school system and an environment that
adds to the normal challenges of raising children. But for the mature adult
the hot, dry and pretty much insect free climate is pretty comfortable. The
side benefits of the tourist economy also plays well for the senior set.
