Maybe the best boat soap I ever used

The rumors were true! There really was a boat under all that dirt.
The water has been off at my slip since October, so today's project was
to motor over to the guest dock and scrub (for 4 hours) her clean.

I stopped and purchased a bottle of Meguire's "Gold Seal" car wash
soap. ($7.99). I've had it with paying $30 a gallon for so-called boat
soap at Big Box Marine- only be disappointed with the results.

This Meguires stuff is so concentrated that it pours like molasses.
I used half a bottle on my very dirty 36-footer, and the boat hasn't
been so clean in a long time.

If you're looking for a good boat soap, the answer may not be a "boat
soap" at all. :-)

Good to know, thanks for the report. I've also had some luck with
Pine-Sol and Simple Green. Pine-Sol seems particularly effective with
brown water line stains, and also black sooty residue.

Gary February 20th 05 04:05 AM

Where did you get the Meguires soap? Is it available at most auto parts
places? I'm not familiar with it, but if I can find it I'll surely give it
a try.

Thanks for the report!

I bought it at a regional variety/grocery, Fred Meyer.

The alternate Super Wal-Mart.

For some reason I just saw this post and can't agree more with Chuck.
I use car products on both boats and they work very well.

Why wouldn't car wash products used on plastic and metal cars work on
plastic and metal boats?

Exactly.

Also, dollar for dollar, the combination car wash/wax products have
worked very well for me on fiberglass boats over the years. They are
great for a quick touch up wash job for instance.

The king of all car care products is the Mequires (sp?) line. I used
them on my antique truck when I had it and I use their stuff on my '70
Corvette (16,000 original miles thank you very much).

Like Chuck said, auto stuff works just fine.

And before anybody says it, I will - I'm very picky about how my boats
look - I like them clean and sharp looking.

I can't say the same for my office, but my boats look great. :)

Yeah... I've been very unimpressed with a variety of "marine" soaps.. and
found for 88 cents / can, generic scrub and bubbles to work the best....

You have to wonder if the 'official' boat soaps are watered down to preserve
pristine lakes etc. My boat is trailerable, so I wash it in the
driveway...same as the van.

Jim February 20th 05 04:42 PM

Simple Green is $7.99 a gallon at Smart and Final. Concentrated, must
be diluted, does everything. Biodegradable. Harbor Patrol has no
problem with seeing it being used.

It's about the only soap I use.

Very few things are not biodegradable. That label does nothing to
impress our local envrio-Nazi's. They point out that during the process
of decomposition the soaps, etc, usually deplete the oxgen in water.

Some of them even do a pretty deceptive demonstration to prove the
point. They will put a few drops of "biodegradable" soap into an
aquarium, and within 24 hours the goldfish will be dead from oxygen
starvation. Looks impressive, until you do the math. How many gallons
of water in a 500 acre lake, with an average depth of 75-feet? I don't
know, but it would probably take several thousand gallons of soap in
such a lake to begin to duplicate the concentration of a few drops in a
10-gallon fish tank. If you covered the lake with boats, gunwale to
gunwale, and *everybody* poured in a gallon of undiluted soap at the
same time, it might begin to duplicate the concentration in the
aquarium demonstration.

Most of our local marinas actually have rules against using soap of any
kind to wash a boat. Fortunately, none are enforced by the marinas and
the "official" enviro Nazis have been told to back off.
(One batch of government officials wanted to fine the Seattle Polilce
Department. The cops were using tap water to "rinse" the patrol boat
after each shift. (No soap involved). The enviro-Nazis got all shrill
about dirt being washed into Lake Union. Of course, the same dirt would
have fallen directly into the lake if it hadn't landed on the police
boat as it fell to earth from our polluted atmosphere....but that
doesn't matter. I heard the Seattle Police told the Department of
Ecology to go and urinate up a rope following the initial complaint.
And should have).

We all need to protect the environment, but at the same time we need to
live in it. That doesn't mean that we should rape and pillage the
public landscape for the short term benefit of a few politically
favored corporations, but we should be able to make a reasonable use of
resources while bearing in mind the responsibility to leave a useable
and enjoyable planet to the next generations.

Jim, February 20th 05 08:09 PM

As explained to me by a PHD environmental type in my YC.

Biodegradable is correct, the soap breaks down into more basic products.
problem is the products resulting feed the weads (and we DO have a wead
problem). Best suggestion is to wash a little offshore.

Another in the line of efficient products is call Rolloff. It's made by
Bell Chemicals and sold by Boatersworld. Floats dirt and build up off
more effectively than anything I've tried.

I have a oxidized blue stripe and this stuff (in it's most diluted form)
washes it away immediately (I've got to repaint the damn thing). Pretty
effective on black streaks too but not quite as much as the black streak
remover.

Sold in gallons for under $20 and a bucket of soapy water takes about a
cup if I remember correctly.

Here's a link. Very satisfied, no connection.

It was a prediction. The election was pretty close. I though Bush was
toast and, if Kerry had run a better campaign, he would have been.

Now that Howard Dean is running the Dems, we won't be trying to sell
Republican lite. It'll start to become a viable alternative.

You however, will continue to assume many of your suppositions to be
true. Only time and accumulated wisdom will give you further insight.
I expect we'll long be out of touch when you finally come to your
senses, if ever.

Texas Ethics Bill Could Allow Appointees to Bar Prosecutions

By Sylvia Moreno
Washington Post Staff Writer

Sunday, February 20, 2005; Page A06

AUSTIN --

A key Republican legislator has introduced a bill that would give a
Texas agency authority to stop prosecution of election law violations,
drawing comparisons to a recent attempt in Washington to rewrite
ethics rules to keep House Majority Leader Tom DeLay in power if he is
ever indicted.

The move by GOP leaders to protect DeLay (R-Tex.) was quashed late
last year when even some Republicans in Congress objected.

In Texas, critics are calling the bill there a similar bold attempt to
protect Republican lawmakers who might get caught in a criminal
investigation into illegal campaign fundraising.

Very few things are not biodegradable. That label does nothing to
impress our local envrio-Nazi's.

Disenfranchised republicans just won't show up at the polls.

Oh goody. Another Nobbyism that'll get dredged up come November when

Don't mean a thing. Electoral votes baby. We got 'em, you don't.

Bush is toast.

Will you be frequenting rec.boats the day after Bush has his ass handed

What an idiotic statement. I expect Bush to win less than a majority of
votes again.

To pit him against the
Champagne Flyboy with the distended cod piece is laughable. People will be

Then they'll cast their vote for Wesley Clark.

Definitely some of the Jipso's finer moments, especially that last one.

The funny part of this is how cocksure you were about the outcome of the
election. I told you repeatedly that Bush would win. In fact, I predicted
that he'd break 50%...making him the first president to do so in 16 years.

Another "jps prediction". And I believe the word you looking for was
plurality. Bill Clinton never won the "majority" of votes either. In fact,
in 1992 he only received 43% of the vote. In 1996, running against a decent
man, but a terrible politician, Clinton got only 46% of the vote. At least
Bush was near 50% in his first election win.

I expect Bush to get 51-52% of the vote in November.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Looks like I was right on with my prediction. He got 51.23% of the vote.

If you read back, you'll see that I was talking to Gould about the
biodegradability of soaps. He mentioned the "enviro-nazi's" opposition to
soaps, and I told him that I was surprised that he and I were on the same
side...because I had figured him for an "enviro-Nazi". That is when you
chimed in on a thread that you had contributed absolutely nothing of
substance to.

One of boatings best kept secrets. I have been using this soap for 30
years. darn good stuff.

I picked up a gallon of it at Wal-Mart, but started buying the expensive
marine stuff at West Marine when I saw all of the bubbles being pumped out
of my bilge into the canal. They seemed to last a lot longer on the surface
of the water in the canal than the biodegradable stuff. I'm sure that it's
just because they use more surfactants...which makes it a better cleaner
anyhow.

Your support for non-biodegradable products has been noted, and a depleted
uranium fuel rod storage site will be excavated soon right near your
house.

Cool. I hear it helps grow big fish. Also, I could use a few extra feet of
water depth by my seawall. Do you think that the excavating guys could
swing by and clear out some of the muck when they're done dumping the DU
fuel rods?

I wonder why kind of rod, reel and line I'd have to use? :)

Let's see - bunch of meat hooks trailing a teaser boogie board with a
little Japanese guy strapped to it and some steel cable off a power
winch trolled at - what? - 25 mph?

I think you could catch a Godzilla with that.
