It's 5F right now outside my home office window.

I knew we were going to pay for those balmy days last week.

Sheesh.

I got about 20 geese and a few ducks sitting in the back yard,
shivering. If they wouldn't crap on the floor, I'd invite them all in.
But I think I'll just toss them a bag of corn and turn on the heater in
the water trough.

I was going to head down to the Bay later for a look, and to see what
the charter boats were bringing in but...to hell with that. It's the
kind of day that makes one one wants to head for the Bass Pro Shops
superstore at Arundel Mills Mall.

I hear ya man! Just checked weather.com and they are reporting the 'feels
like' temperature of 55 in my zip code. With the wind, I am guessing it is
probably much closer to 50.

In any case, we are heading out by boat later today for dinner with the
neighbors and then scope out the local docks for the ever elusive snook.
Looks like we will have to pack the long pants and maybe a thermos of
coffee. In any event, going boating sure beats just talking or thinking
about it.

Ah, yes. snook in Florida. I remember it well. Well, I just booked a
short trip to Miami for early March, and, if I'm able, I'll be down
there for a couple of days in February, too. Unlikely to encounter
snook, though. But the beauty of Miami for a traveling fisherman is that
you can catch some nice big fish within two miles of shore.

Here's a snook tale to warm any fisherman's heart. The last time I was
at Lake O, I was staying at Roland and Mary Ann Martin's nice fishing
resort (it is, by the way, a really nice fishing resort and not
expensive), and had just come in before the afternoon thunderbumpers.
There were a couple guys over at the fish cleaning shed with fish that
were far too big for a local catch, so I strolled over for a look-see.

Well! These guys had taken the canal from Lake O over to the Gulf side,
some 60 miles, if memory serves, and had caught themselves some gorgeous
snook on fly rod. They were both pro guides who worked out of Martin's
marina, and every so often they tired of fishing for large-mouth bass
with their paying customers, so they'd bolt down the canal for salt
water fishing on flyrods and, of course, the favorite species was snook.

Who can blame them?

If you haven't tried fishing for large-mouth bass, I really recommend
Martin's place on Okeechobee. February and March are ideal for a visit;
it gets very hot there beginning in late April.

The weather was perfect here on Galveston Bay today. We talked about
sliding the Carolina Skiff off of the dock and going out to some deep holes
for some Specks but the tide was really low. So my wife and a neighbor
went to the dike and picked up a couple buckets of oysters instead...while I
watched football. It doesn't get much better than that!!

The problem is that they won't let you keep what you catch in the tank.

Just might have to go to Arundel Mills Mall tomorrow.
