That's it. Even with filters, killfiles, etc. there basically isn't any
discussion of boating any longer in this NG. Ya'll have fun.

Well, if it's that important to you make it happen.

For a great model of how a boating site could work have a look at an RVing site
I use.
campingworld.com/cforum/imdex.cfm?site=CWI

Shucks, it even has a discussion group for all the BS.... called "Around the
Campfire?".

Some people want a lot more structure imposed than the rec.boats format allows.

There's a promising site at iboats.com

Lots of categories, rather than none, so if you are only interested in reading
about outboard repair (for example) that is the only category you need to see.

About the second or third most popular category is "Dockside Chat", where
people are allowed to discuss the issues of the day, etc. Just took a look this
morning to discover a bunch of conservatives reassuring one another that Bill
Clinton actually awarded Haliburton the contract to clean up after the Iraq
war. It was rather amusing.

What is different between the iboats.com and rec boats is the tone of the
posts.
If somebody posts, "I think brand X or Y builds a decent boat because....." the
poeple who disagree will raise boating related counterpoints. All too often on
this site the responses are, "well, they'd build a better boat if Bush hadn't
exported all of our skilled trade jobs to India" or "you're a
miserable and pathetic idiot to have that opinion. You've never been on a boat
in your life, you LSOS!"

Even on dockside chat, the comments and responses are restrained. One of the
conservatives made a comment in the single thread I examined, "Thanks to
(another conservative) for posting the truth! This board has far too many
liberals on it these days." but I didn't see the personal
flames, a case of two guys deciding where to meet between Maine and Georgia to
duke it out over a difference of opinion, etc.

IMO, the folks whining about rec.boats ought to check out this site. It's
probably everything they hoped rec.boats would be, and they don't have to
change human nature to see it happen.

I believe the folks griping about OT posts are simply crying out for a more
structured format. Good news, such formats are out there.

Chuck, you've hit it on the nose. I hang around bcadventures.com fishing forum,
and it's the same way. There's some dislike of "NFR" (non fishing related) posts
there too, but the TONE is friendly, even if they're discussing politics,
religion, or even fishing. Of course, they're all Canadians there...

And is IS possible to disagree about these things and still be civil. I like
Butch Ammon, even though I disagree with (*NOT* object to!) most of his
political beliefs. OTOH, there are people in this NG (can't recall the names -
they're all bozo'ed) who have somewhat similar beliefs to me, but are just
assholes.

And the idea that EVERYTHING is somehow related to either Isreal or the POTUS is
lucicous to me.

Florida, you are SO right. This group sucks and is full of nothing
but off topic posts. And it seems no one here will allow a monitor
for the group so I guess that idea is out. Do you think we should
follow Keith's lead and leave and never come back to this list?

Please do.
The more of you who do, the less OT posts about OT posts there will be.

Capt. Bill
