One one river trip, we had the Designated Canary - like the ones in mines. It
was the "DC"'s job to lead point on the trail. By picking the largest person
to be the DC, you are assurred that everyone else can safely step where ever
the DC had without losing footing, etc. Haven't lost a DC yet.
