JohnJ,
All you have to do is read the responses to Harry's posts. If you keep him
filtered the only thing you miss is when he makes a snide comment about your
military background or the fact that you are a substitute teacher. If I
were you, I would keep him filtered, you will see the posts where he makes a
fool out of himself.

What a smuck, Harry gets fooled again.

What I think Harry meant was that those with the highest IQ's in each
of
the
States voted for Bush. Otherwise, the post meant absolutely nothing.

You're right, he is a smuck!

Harry isn't scoring any points for intelligent posts today. But I did
love
the dog biting off a finger story. That should make it into the internet
Myth Hall of Fame.

All this praise for Harry's latest story is making me want to unfilter
him again. Would it be worth it?

If you want to see the real IQ by state go to:

http://www.sq.4mg.com/stateIQ-income.htm

Generally substantiates the "hoax" post!

The top four on the "real" site are blue states in 2004.

Eight of the top ten on the "real' site are blue states.

Ten of the top sixteen are blue states.

Only three blue states in the "bottom 15".

Thanks for the link, very enjoyable. :-)

Gould,

I am glad you enjoyed the link, but you need to learn how to read the chart.

The states in the individual average IQ are alphabetically, not ranked by
order.
So there can not be a top 10.

So in the top tier 102 - 104 average IQ range there are 16 states in that
range.

Of those 16 states 9 voted for Kerry
7 voted for Bush.

The range for the top 34 states was 4 points
46 states was 7 points
50 states was 10 points

Where the hoax showed a difference of 28 points.

You also missed a very important note at the bottom " The most likely reason
for the lower IQ's in southern states is their significant Black population.
African-Americans consistently test at an average 85 IQ level."

If you notice Washington DC was next to the lowest IQ in the nation.

Yes, but one point above Bush strongholds South Carolina and
Mississippi.

Creating some concern that the list may have come from a racist source- (or
that it merely reflects the long recognized cultural bias in many IQ tests-
particularly those administered to children). However, I'm not the one who
touted this as the "real" list- merely took advantage of the fact that it was
so represented.

My observations are generally correct, although when you take the alphabetizing
into account perhaps only nine, rather than ten, of the top sixteen were blue
states.
Did you remember that New Hampshire was a blue state this time, not a red one?

As there were certainly fewer blue states than red states in the overall count,
what percentage of blue states vs. percentage of red states were in that top
16? A reasonably dramatic difference, revealed by the "real list".

I am sitting hear reading this thread and laughing. There is no way to
break down an average IQ number for the group of people in any particular
state who voted for Bush or Kerry. To think you can, and to carry on a
debate about it is nothing short of comical.

That's not what the list is purported to represent. It represents the average
IQ levels in each state. Yes, some very bright people undoubtedly voted for
George Bush, along with some dumb as dirt. Exactly the same thing can be said
for Kerry voters.

The only thing that is interesting is that the list actually does demonstrate a
general tendency for the majority of voters in the states purported to have
higher average IQ's to favor Kerry.

We know, for example, that residents of New Hampshire are shown on the "real
list" as having a higher average IQ than the residents of Mississippi. We can
also measure how the majority of people in that state voted by whether the
electoral votes were given to Bush or Kerry. If the list is correct, and we
know how the electoral votes were allocated, the discussion is not only
possible but at least slightly entertaining.

This doesn't mean that the dumbest person in New Hampshire is still brighter
than the smartest one in Mississippi, or indicate how any individual person in
any state or at any IQ level voted in the election.

JimH,
They estimated the average IQ by using the SAT and ACT and adjusting the
numbers to approximate the IQ of those who took the test. They then
adjusted that number down 10 pts. to estimate an average.

So while it is all BS, it is interesting BS.
