Question for you Bassy: Why are *you* taking a contrary view to the
discussion of God? Does being a liberal mean that one does not believe in
one God?

Harry,

Thanks for making my point for me. The celebration of Christmas by
communities and local governments, and the Proclamation of giving Thanks to
God (Thanksgiving) should not be prohibited by our government.

Now that might be offensive to some atheist, but what the hell, you can't
please everyone.

So, you wouldn't find it offensive if a group that coveted, say Cheese
Sauce, wanted the government to protect them from being prohibited?

(Praise CHEESESAUCE!)

Wouldn't bother me any.

Now celebrating Jalapeño sauce - that should be prohibited.

Damn fundamentalist Jalapeño Saucers - they should all be lined up
against the wall and shot.

Kill 'em all and let Jalapeño sort 'em out.

Bastids - each and every one of them.

Later,

Tom

Because I made it very clear when I wrote the Ten Commandments - right
there, Numero Uno.

There might be a few fundamentalist in this group. According to Harry
anyone who voted Republican is a fundamentalist.

If so, I think I just did.

Gould,

There is only one God. The different religions are different culture's
way
of understanding that one God.

While I agree with you in principle, somebody needs to tell the different
religions. Seems we have a lot of people dieing every day because members
of
religion A, B, and C all have "competing" views of God.

Just try to tell the average American fundie that God listens to the
prayers of
Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, and others just as readily as those of a WASP
American. Go ahead, I dare ya. :-)

I had to reread your sentence a few times to make sure I understood what you
said, but the answer to your question is "No, I would not". In fact today
the government protects everyone's right to praise anything they want,
including cheesesause".

Harry,
Federal, state and local governments across the country are spending
millions of dollars, on Thanksgiving and Christmas today. These paid
holidays are governments official endorsement of the celebration of Jesus'
birth and those who believe in giving thanks to a god.

If we follow you logic, shouldn't we stop using tax dollars to pay for
governmental employees to take a day off for a religious holiday?

While you may not consider Thanksgiving a religious holiday, atheist would
disagree with you. Thanksgiving is, and always has been an official day to
give thanks to God.

Hmmm...I don't recall stating I thought it "OK" for governmental
entities to get involved in religious holy days. "Smith" must be
engaging in "creative post manipulation" again.

I don't believe local, state or federal government agencies should in
any way be involved in the "celebration" of any religious holy day, and
Christmas, despite its pagan trappings, is a religious holy day.

On the other hand, I don't view Thanksgiving as a religious holy day.

Why not?

Because logic dictates that the needs of the many, outweigh the needs
of the few.

Dave

You're spouting Marx, who, by the way, was often consulted by Commander
Spock.

The point Dave is trying to make is that the government can't interfere with
religious practice nor can it sponsor it. Allowing the majority to use
public facilities for a religious observance does not sponsor religion.
Allowing the minority to use those facilities the same way is by way of not
interfering with religious observances. Trying to outlaw any religious
observance is against the bill of rights.

The Bill of Rights guarantees the rights of the people whether majority or
minority can't be abridged by a majority. The way that the LEFT is using to
eliminate these rights is not thru elected representatives (majority rule)
but thru the courts. Thus the reason those on the right want
constitutionally conservative judges who won't write laws but will properly
interpret from the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.
