Think Nixon of all people who did the right thing for the country even though he could have been President much sooner. Urban legend. Nixon, or at least Nixon's people, did contest the election. They lost. http://slate.msn.com/id/91350/ |

I believe one of the options on an Ohio ballot was 'funding for a zoo'. I an only remember two cases where we had a chance to vote directly on issues and both were during municipal elections. Our big controversy last month was...should we repeal the 'Lord's Day Act' and allow shopping on Sunday. Very polarized issue with the no side getting a narrow win. Yep, it was a lengthy ballot but it was not confusing for me. It took about the same time for me. Yup, I live about a block or so West of Giant Eagle. Is that a statue, an Indian Chief or a supermarket? Supermarket lol Ahh...thanks...I don't spend a lot of time around Avon Lake. Thank goodness. I can only image the stench if you did. |

Ain't gonna happen in CT. And I just don't get it - one of the most liberal states in the Union and at the same time one of the most uptight. I not sure it's a moral issue. I was bitching about the liquor sales hours to a Connecticut store owner. He made the point that most of the owners prefer the 8pm and Sunday closings. As most of the liquor stores are Mom&Pop type operations, it was easier to staff and allowed them time off. This was several years ago, so things might have changed. |

That was the argument here in MA for years. When they lifted the Blue Laws, it was left up to the store owner as to opening on Sundays or not. I don't think I know of a package store anywhere in our neighborhood that stays closed now. Eisboch |

It's more than the "blue" laws - this is a very uptight state. I think it has to do with some kind of odd Puritan "redemption" ethic. With respect to the store closings - bull****. As Eisboch said - they pretty much said the same thing in MA until the laws were repealed and now....can't find one that isn't open. :) Personally, I think it's a good time for Prohibition to reinstate it'self.
