Now OT. Are all Righties scumbags? I've always considered myself on
the right, but sure hate the idea that you guys would consider me your
enemy. Is that just the way it is?

I do believe that there is only one poster in the NG who often states all right
wingers are scum bags.

Is the right the enemy of the left? No, but some righties, (Hannity, LImbaugh,
Coulter, O'Reilly, etc etc etc etc) claim to be........but only because anybody
left of Zell Miller is a treasonous socialist and will be taken out and shot
when we finally get rid of the pesky bill of rights. :-)

No, not all righties are scumbags. There are many righteous
conservatives of conscience whose views are well-reasoned and acceptable
by men and women of good will.

There are a couple of righties in this very newsgroup who seem quite
reasonable to me, even on the issues on which we are diametrically
opposed. But those righties are in the minority here. Most are
closed-minded ideologues who support every brainfart George W. Bush
emits, and who think a rightie who strays from that path is a traitor.
Several of the righties here, for example, call John McCain a traitor.
Those are the scumbag righties.

How do you feel about John McCain?

I like him a lot personally, and respect him and his ideas, even though
many of his ideas are the opposite of the ones I hold. But McCain is a
man of integrity, and reached his views intellectually. I also admired
Barry Goldwater late in his life.

Whe I was much younger than I am now, in fact still a freshman in high
school, we visited Washington DC on a Field Trip. Amoung the group
were a few nerds who were into electronics and were all hams of
various licenses.

Naturally, we asked to see W3USS which was the Senate's amateur radio
station (several Senators were hams at the time). Somebody talked to
somebody and we were taken into the sanctum of W3USS.

As we were entering, out walks this white haired guy who introduces
himself as Barry, K7UGA and gave us a tour of the station - we had no
idea who he was at the time (this was in 1963), but he asked who had
the highest license, which was me and allowed me to be Control Op - I
ran 40 CW Q's and it was the time of my life. :)

It wasn't until late in '63/'64 that I finally figured out who "Barry"
was.
