Default Voting for Bush by Absentee Ballot...

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - A man who swung an alligator at his girlfriend
during an argument was sentenced to six months in jail.

David Havenner, 41, of Port Orange, pleaded no contest to misdemeanor
charges of battery and possession of an alligator, said Linda Pruitt,
spokeswoman for the State Attorney's Office. He changed his earlier plea
of not guilty, she said Wednesday.

He was sentenced to six month in jail with 48 days credit for time
served during the Sept. 1 hearing, according to court records.

Sheriff's officials said Havenner was keeping the 3-foot gator in his
bathtub and swung it at his girlfriend, Nancy Monico, 39, during an
argument on July 16.

Monico told investigators that Havenner beat her with his fists, then
grabbed the gator and swung it at her as she tried to escape. The gator
struck Monico at least once, after which time Havenner threw empty beer
bottles at her and then kicked her out of their mobile home, she told
investigators.

Havenner told investigators that Monico bit his hand because she was
upset that they had run out of alcohol.

The alligator was later released into the St. Johns River, wildlife
commission officials said.

Now, I need to clarify. Was Havenner considered to have caused battery to
the girlfriend, or to the gator? The account is unclear. :-)

Now, in accordance with your signature line, Harry, let me ask this -- Shall
we consider it a failure of Liberalism that Mr. Havenner is now
incarcerated? Or are we to believe that it was somehow a triumph of
Liberalism that prior to the event Mr. Havenner, the gator, and the
apparently short-tempered and toothy (but hardly toothsome) Ms Monico were
free to mix with society, wandering their trailer park in search of more
beer and an evening's diversion?

The gator, I imagine. Lucky he wasn't living in Gainesville...they would
have thrown away the key for reckless endangerment of the official mascot.

The latter...remember, Havenner is a Republican voter.

This was not made clear in the article. Perhaps a presumption on your part?

Although, if Mr. Havenner is indeed a Republican, it is easy to understand
why, considering the events. Who among us would not react angrily if his
pet 'gator were to be arbitrarily taken and released in the wild by some
heavy-handed, tree-hugging, jack-booted thugs from the Wildlife Commission?

Perhaps Kerry should take hold of this story and make it a new campaign
cornerstone.

Sheriff's officials also commented that Havenner seemed to be set off by
recent poll numbers showing Bush with a *huge* lead. Apparently, Nancy, an
avid Bush fan, was taunting Havenner about the latest poll numbers, and may
have even referred to the NY Times as "a liberal rag".

The gator apparently reads only the WSJ, which also served to annoy
Havenner. He (the gator) also occasionally glances at an Enquirer if Nancy
picked one up at the Piggly Wiggly.
