I thought Chuck made a couple of important points which have nothing
to do with the relative intelligence of the partys in question.

Lead by example and set a higher tone (assuming that off topic
political discussion is always going to be with us in some form). You
detract from the credibility of your argument by being too quick to go
for the throat and roll in the gutter. That inspires others to do
likewise.

Some people don't have the mental horsepower to express anything without
the
use of stereotype or "talking points", and some are unable to disagree
without
resorting to insult. You're brighter than such folks, so that ought to
reflect
