He helped rich people avoid service in Viet Nam. I won't mention any
specific people he helped, just that he's ashamed that he helped rich,
powerful families avoid service.

Asking for forgiveness and repenting after the fact is good but a ture man
of integrity would not have put himself into the situation where he would
regret his actions.

Your original quote made no mention of Vietnam.
