Default Have Merc serial number, can't find engine/drive info

Hi all,

First post; please forgive if dumb.

I recently bought a 1973 Bayliner Saratoga 2550 IO from a private party, and
I'm trying to find out information on the engine & drive. The previous
owner told me that it's a Ford Windsor 351 Mercruiser. I've grabbed the
serial numbers off of the stickers on the port side valve cover and entered
it into Mercury's PartsExpress site, and I come up blank. Can anyone decode
my serial numbers?

Engine: 3601827
Drive: 6183040

According to one of the serial-number-to-model-year cross references I
found, it's either a 1971-73 188 HP Model 885, or a 1973 225 HP Model 225.
I'm thinking that it's the 188 HP. Am I even close? Where do I find parts
for the engine & drive?

Thanks,
Matthew

If a Ford Windsor, then the major engine parts can be gotten from any auto
parts store. Make sure the alternator and carb is Marine. The pulley's,
etc. are Ford Industrial Engine parts. Used to be able to get all the parts
from Red Line Marine in Lewiston, ID. They burned down last year, so do not
know if they rebuilt, or someone else has taken over. I would assume on the
HP, that the difference is 2 barrel vs. 4 barrel carb.

If it is a 351 it may be the merc 255 TR. Is it a four bbl or 2 bbl carb?
The 188 would be underpowered in a 2550.

I'll have to check.

That's what a local marine shop repairman said as well.

Thanks,
Matthew
