Discovery Channel and the Devils triangle.
 

Did anyone happen to see the scientist on the Discovery Channel who has a
theory that the mystery of the Devils Triangle is methane bubbles? I was only
watching it off and on and they did a demonstration where they pupmed methane
gas all around under what appeared to be a 20' leisure boat. The boat sank
very slowly in what appeared to be fairly calm water but I missed the reason
they said the gas made it sink. Was it from fizzing water slowly filling it or
what?

I didn't see it, but I am familiar with the principal. When any type of gas
is present in excess in water, the buoyancy of floating objects decreases.
If you think of it this way, the space that the gas takes up equates to
there being no water in that space. And since vessels don't float in air,
they sink.

I saw that item a while back. Believe the bubbles created less buoyancy on
the water. Can't remember if 'surface tension' entered the equation.

It's a combination of loss of surface tension and lack of water
density to support any type of weight.

One of the big fears of gas platforms is a well head blowout - there
have been instances of entire platforms and 100 foot service boats
sinking during one of these events.

experiment to show that enormous releases of methane from the sea floor will
easily stall aircraft engines once the gas bubbles up to the surface and enters
the atmosphere.

Hmmmm - have to be a lot of pressure to do that - the column of
methane would have to be quite wide and high.

The whole 'Devil's Triangle' story is a bunch of hoooy. Prolly dreamed
up by some Democrat to scare little children. The fact is; you can draw
a 'Devil's Triangle' on ANY stretch of navigable waters around the world
and chalk up dozens if not hundreds of 'unexplained' disappearences.
Now, if only Kerry would dissappear....
