Discovery Channel and the Devils triangle.
Did anyone happen to see the scientist on the Discovery Channel who has a
theory that the mystery of the Devils Triangle is methane bubbles? I was only watching it off and on and they did a demonstration where they pupmed methane gas all around under what appeared to be a 20' leisure boat. The boat sank very slowly in what appeared to be fairly calm water but I missed the reason they said the gas made it sink. Was it from fizzing water slowly filling it or what? |

I didn't see it, but I am familiar with the principal. When any type of gas
is present in excess in water, the buoyancy of floating objects decreases. If you think of it this way, the space that the gas takes up equates to there being no water in that space. And since vessels don't float in air, they sink. "CCred68046" wrote in message ... I saw that item a while back. Believe the bubbles created less buoyancy on
the water. Can't remember if 'surface tension' entered the equation. |

Another fascinating theory and demonstration in the same show included an
experiment to show that enormous releases of methane from the sea floor will easily stall aircraft engines once the gas bubbles up to the surface and enters the atmosphere. |

The whole 'Devil's Triangle' story is a bunch of hoooy. Prolly dreamed
up by some Democrat to scare little children. The fact is; you can draw a 'Devil's Triangle' on ANY stretch of navigable waters around the world and chalk up dozens if not hundreds of 'unexplained' disappearences. Now, if only Kerry would dissappear.... Hmmmm - have to be a lot of pressure to do that - the column of
methane would have to be quite wide and high. Then again..... Later, The experiments they ran on the show stalled aircraft engines at an extremely low concentration of methane. |

And, I didn't even use a box cutter....

Water with a lot of bubbles in it provides less bouyant force, as it is much less dense than pure water, causing the boat to seem heavier than it is, even eliminating it's support almost completely. Methane salts could kill all life on earth, if it were to all escape at once, or properly exploited could save us from the energy crunch. They exist abundantly all over the place. The Devil's triangle is heavily travelled ,and like main highways, offer more opportunity for mishaps like driver went to sleep and crashed, etc. High concentrations of methane in atmosphere displace oxygen, causing flame outs and deadly blackouts. Methane is less dense than air and can reduce the lift of wings in flight. Is it any wonder, really? Terry K |
