I've got a rather big head (I know, I know) and I am delighted with my
special order size 8 Tilley outdoors hat (25 1/8"; 64.5 cm). I am getting into WW open canoeing and when I did a course none of the helmets on offer fit me and it was agony to have to wear an L/XL one. I've scoured the net but my search skills seem to be letting me down. I keep getting hits of sites advertising XXL life vests but not helmets. Clearly there seems to be a market for canoeists with normal to small heads and big guts, but not the other way round! I wonder whether it all boils down to economics - a XXL helmet wouldn't sell in millions and maybe would be more involved to manufacture to pass impact resistance tests etc. So will I need to buy a Schuberth XXL motorcycle helmet and look like a right idiot or what else is out there? Football helmets? I may just have to go back to table tennis ... Pete |

Pete, my head also falls outside the scales of most helmet manufacturers, I got lucky with the Grateful Heads "Dropzone" helmet. It allows for the addition of a faceguard as well :-) Even for my head it offers great all around protection: http://wilko.webzone.ru/soc-04.jpg -- Wilko van den Bergh wilko(a t)dse(d o t)nl Eindhoven The Netherlands Europe ---Look at the possibilities, don't worry about the limitations.--- http://wilko.webzone.ru/ |

Pete I normally would not be replying to this because I do not have a big head (pun intended) but just yesterday I happened to be reading about Gath helmets and remembered seeing XXL sizes. You might take a look. http://www.murrays.com/ Chuck |

I also wear a Tilley size 8. I've also raced wildwater C2 for about
10 years and need a helmet that does not squeeze me. The only, and I mean the only, really big helmet I've found is the Rush by Grateful Heads. See http://www.gratefulheads.com/rush_lg.htm My brother has a Drop Zone - it is probably an XL for say up to a 24.5" head, but for the 25"+ size like me it is too small. The Rush fits pretty well. I got the next to thinnest foam insert and shaved it a little to make it comfortable. A little funky (my wife does not like it) but it is truly comfortable to wear. |

From another Tilley size 8 wearer, I recommend the Rush by Grateful
Heads, with the thinnest liner. It is noticeably larger than the Drop Zone. |

Correct, I have a 63cm circumference (that's 24.8" for metrically challenged folks) head, and for me the dropzone works. If it's more than that, you probably are looking at only one or two helmets that fit and protect well.
