There will be people rushing out to buy them. There appears to be a

like the fact that they are a lot quieter than the go fast boats of 20

Yup that is almost a quarter of a million worth of engines once you
pay to have them rigged and pay the taxes. That is before you buy a
boat.

Another take on it

Maybe I will get a pair for my pontoon. ;-)

Unfortunately I think two will put me over the weight limit for gear
and crew.
It is close to the total weight of my boat rigged, full tank of fuel,
the dog and me on board.

These motors seem to drink about 50 GPH WOT (6300-6400) and more like
20 at a 4000-4500 cruise.

https://boattest.com/article/new-mer...00-hp-outboard

The boats they talk about usually have 600-800 gallon tanks so that
gives them a few hundred mile range and a $2000+ fill up.

How bad do you want to get there?

There are plenty of those kinds of setups down on the coast, and especially in Charleston. The reasoning, I'm told, is that the Gulf Stream is 50 miles off-shore so you want something fast to get you out there to fish and to return you to shore when you're done.

At least that's what the guys tell their wives. :)

Years ago, I guy I knew casually, neighbor of a friend, was telling about
filling up his dad’s boat. Pulled in to the marina and decided to go get a
beer while the attendant was filling. Said, after he came back the fuel
gauge had barely moved. Found out the boat had enough tankage to go from
San Francisco to Hawaii.

Quads show up in those tests and I suppose it is just a matter of time
before some guy with the money goes with more. We are talking about
50+ foot boats tho. The thing that encouraged packing them on is the
power head doesn't move, they just swivel the lower unit so you can
pack them in tight. They are 3/4 of a ton each tho. The transoms are 9
or 10 inches thick.

Interestingly enough an engine on a sailboat is most useful when you
are approaching land or entering a harbor. Offshore they mostly get
used as expensive battery chargers. A lot of cruisers are going solar
however to get away from that.

How bad do you want to get there?

Foolishness!
The wind is still free...at least for the time being.

Sure if you are relatively poor or really really rich but if you can
afford it and you are getting out of sight of land you want an engine
on that sail boat.

===

Interestingly enough an engine on a sailboat is most useful when you
are approaching land or entering a harbor. Offshore they mostly get
used as expensive battery chargers. A lot of cruisers are going solar
however to get away from that.

That's correct, the only time we used the diesel engine was coming into or leaving the club or other docking.
There was a lady with a J24 who could sail right in and tie up to what was essentially half a berth. She was more worried about us coming in next to her under power. She eventually had a big piece of foam on her starboard side across from us.
Don't know why, we never came that close when I was aboard. ;-)

Yup that is almost a quarter of a million worth of engines once you
pay to have them rigged and pay the taxes. That is before you buy a
boat.

A quarter mil will only buy three rigged...don't you need at least six?

Quads show up in those tests and I suppose it is just a matter of time
before some guy with the money goes with more. We are talking about
50+ foot boats tho. The thing that encouraged packing them on is the
power head doesn't move, they just swivel the lower unit so you can
pack them in tight. They are 3/4 of a ton each tho. The transoms are 9
or 10 inches thick.

Yep, that ship has sailed.

Picture a dummy who got himself wing on wing downwind with close 8
ft following seas. The only thing the dummy WASN'T AFRAID TO DO
was maintain course and run the engine at full throttle. Try
doing that for 11 hours. The dummy was prepared to beach the boat
if conditions didnt change.

When my buddy was drifting into Cuban waters and no decent wind, he
sure wanted a motor. Fortunately just when they were getting really
nervous a little puff of wind blew them offshore but they still ended
up on the wrong side of the Keys and just got lucky stumbling onto St
Pete beach. They were about to start heading west, looking for Vero.
(they had an idea about latitude but not much of a clue about
longitude).
Fresh water was a serious problem at that point.
This was long before GPS and they couldn't afford LORAN.

Yeah but.......a new suit of sails could last 10 years if you don't race plus you have to factor in how much gas was saved over that decade.

My father in law was a sailor. Last boat an Islander 30, that replaced a
Choy Le Bermuda 32. Besides the docking fees, sails sometimes. Sure was
not cheap wind power.

The boats they talk about usually have 600-800 gallon tanks so that
gives them a few hundred mile range and a $2000+ fill up.

How bad do you want to get there?

Foolishness!
The wind is still free...at least for the time being.
Sure if you are relatively poor or really really rich but if you can
afford it and you are getting out of sight of land you want an engine
on that sail boat.

The wind may be free, but harnessing it sure is not.

Yeah, I am not a blow boater but I hear guys whining that a set of
sails is way more than I paid for my F-70, even for a fairly small day
sailer.

Yeah but.......a new suit of sails could last 10 years if you don't race
plus you have to factor in how much gas was saved over that decade.

Probably nowhere enough to pay for the sails and rigging. Plus the stuff
if the boat stays in the water vs as trailer.
