According to the State of Maryland, where I live, these .308 rifles are
"too heavy" to be handled like .223/5.56 ARs, and therefore are not
prohibited.

I agree there were a bunch of morons writing those laws but they were
democrats so what do you expect?

An M1A that shoots the same rounds and weighs at least a pound more
than an AR-10 IS an assault weapon.
The chinese knockoff of the M1A, the Norinco M-14 is OK. They are
identical and from a couple feet away you can't tell them apart.
Without looking at the stamp on the receiver, I doubt you could with
them in your hand.

Stupid people writing stupid laws.

You just own a gun that slipped through a loop hole, like the rest of
your assault weapons.

I follow the firearms laws in my state to the letter. I don't write
these laws, but I find out what they are, and I obey them. If these
laws annoy you, as they seem to, why, that's all good.

I find it a bit amusing that you claim to follow firearms laws "to the
letter" and acknowledge that you "don't write them"Â* but when it comes
to Trump trying to follow and enforce immigration laws, you're totally
against it.

The Trump Admin's "enforcement" is based upon racism, xenophobia, and
the desire to feed red meat and fear to its base voters, and nothing
else. Maybe you fall for Trump's hatred, lies, and bull****, but I don't.

And you follow the letter of the law regards firearms so you can possess a
firearm that is against the spirit of the law.

Yeah Harry always says accuracy is his main goal but he goes out of
his way to get a high capacity assault weapon that has to be fine
tuned to even get reasonable accuracy when a Remington 700 would shoot
sub MOA right out of the box. It is just not sexy enough for him.
How is he going to mow down all of those Trumpies with a bolt action
gun that has a tiny internal magazine?

I prefer the five round mags in my .308. I'm not after more weight.

But it will take a larger mag.

Indeed. 10 round mags are readily available and legal here. I have one.
If I wanted to drive across to Virginia, I could buy 20 rounders there
legally and legally bring them back to Maryland and use them legally in
Maryland. I just can't buy or sell them in Maryland. If the state of
Maryland wanted to do more about that, it could.

Loopholes. Bad written law. California you can not bring in more than 10
rounds mags even if legally bought out of state.

Perhaps the law is written as the writers wanted it to be written.

That is a problem with a lot of laws. Way vague and basically
meaningless.

I think in the case of Massachusetts gun laws are conceived and written
by legislators who are more interested in impressing their core voter
base than any realistic concern about safety. Whenever there's a
shooting by some nutcase in the country they quickly check to see if
the firearm he used is legal in MA.

I gave that one away, in its baggie, unused. I like the five rounders.
Good target ammo is 70 cents to 90 cents a round, three to nearly
four times the cost of good .223 target ammo. Shooting slow is the way
to go.

Then why didn't you buy a real target rifle?
There are some real nice ones out there.
I also wonder if you have looked at the 6.5 Creedmore. Guys are
squeezing amazing stuff out of that flat shooting little round.
If you really are shooting slow, you might be a guy who could get into
reloading. It is economical and also allows you to get as much
precision out as you are willing to put in.

this up.

Much like the feelings many of us have regarding your political
preachings despite the thousands upon thousands of times you bring
them up.

Tell you what...you shoot the way you like, and I'll shoot the way I
like. I usually shoot one 20-round box of .308 when I visit the range, a
50-round box of 9mm and a couple hundred rounds of .22LR. My feelings
about reloading haven't changed since the last three times you brought
this up.

Hey do what you like but you seem like you are really a hands on guy
and there is a lot to reloading if you are really trying to squeeze
the last millimeter out of your groups.
That Creedmore is also getting to be a very popular round for guys who
like the sport you seem to have taken up. It is basically a necked
down .308 with improved down range (accuracy) performance. More guns
are being chambered for it and I imagine you can just buy a Creedmore
upper for the AR you have. Ammo for it is available pretty much
everywhere these days.

Perhaps the law is written as the writers wanted it to be written.

If so they are more stupid than I thought.
They say "no copycats of a forbidden gun" then turn around and accept
an exact copy of a banned M1A, right down to being able to swap parts
around. In fact most people advise Norinco guys to buy a USGI bolt
because the forging on the chink copy is crap.

I'll bet the Maryland legislators are waiting, hats in hand, for you to
send them letters expressing your opinions about their efforts
firearms. Write away.

If I was going to write about anything, it would be to repeal the
whole stupid law but since I don't live there I really don't care.
I will just send my money to the NRA and they will protect your right
to have the loophole guns you have.
