Close enough to the hole that if you laid a putter down it would be
closer than the leather grip ... back when clubs had leather grips and
putters were not 5' long.

Also called a 'gimme' in golf. We usually play 'gimmes' (which are not legal), giving the putt to
someone if they're within a foot or two of the hole. Saves a lot of time.
