There, again, Populism misses the boat.

Bismarck (Conservative) created the modern welfare state (Liberal?) in
Germany. After the German Revolution, post WW1, the German
Conservatives wished to create a "New World Order" (isn't that
Liberal?) and happily joined forces with the Nazis (closet
Conservatives that hated Capitalism), which then outlawed all of the
other parties.. including the Conservatives (who apparently hated
liberals more than Socialism).

Amazing how history is rewritten....

Actually, they *all* hated Communism.

Really? In East Germany, after WWII, the Communist Party of Germany
(KPD) and the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) merged to
become the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED).

Then...... they all actually did hate Nazis.... seems like everybody
needs somebody to hate. Huh?

Sounds like WWII brought about some changes in attitudes, eh?

You have to seriously wonder how many hated the nazis or how many were
just more afraid of the Stasi. It is not like dissent in the DDR was
something you could do.

Well, I certainly understand fearing the Stasi, but they actually went
after Nazis, imprisoning some and making many others ineligible to
hold office.

I don't know if it was attitudes, terms, definitions, or what, but I
find the whole social political phenomenon absolutely confusing.

If a person held strong personal beliefs, how did they reconcile all
of the change and confusion..... I can only make sense of it if they
held a strong identity with [something] and believed only what that
[something] espoused.... however that [something] changed.

Makes me dizzy.....

You referred to "post WWI" not WWII in your comments (above).

During the years after World War One, when Hitler was gaining
power in 30's, he despised Communism as did the Nazi party.

His idol was actually Benito Mussolini of Italy .. a fascist.

Hitler and Mussolini had one thing in common. They wanted to restore
their country to it's prior glory. Hitler just wanted to reach back 50
years or so, Il Duce was looking back more like 1900 years.
It is always a popular position to hold tho, if your citizens feel
like they have been in decline. You only have to look at Putin's real
popularity. It is not likely to be the 80-90% he claims but 60-70% is
not unreasonable based on studies from outside Russia. His message is
popular there.

I watched the Netflix documentary series that John recommended and
learned. Learned a lot I never really knew about the years between the
two world wars, especially about the history of facist Italy in the
30's, Hitler's rise to power and his admiration for Mussolini.

I agree, seems Mussolini was intent on restoring the grandeur of the
Roman Empire, including the control of Greece. Hilter's goal was to
greatly expand Germany's territory. Both believed in a dictatorship.
Communism was regarded as a threat to both of them.

Stalin took advantage of the latter years and months of the war to
expand the influence of the Soviet Union in a huge way.

I also learned a lot from that show. Amazing how well it was put together.

Am in the process of reading Ken Follett's "The Century Trilogy" Ssimilar in style to Herman Wouk's
work, it follows families through the years starting prior to WWI. I am on the second book now,
"Winter of the World". Great series.
