Salvador in the last fifth of the last century, you might have some
understanding. Over the centuries and especially in the first two thirds
of the 20th Century, a relatively few landowners, aided by the
government and its military, grabbed peasant land any way they could,
including mass murder, and left the people they robbed poorer than they
already had been. The country has a bloody history, and much of it is
due to the wholesale robbing of the poor.
