When Mom dies about 6 years ago, they insisted that we have a viewing prior to cremation to avoid a mix up like the one out west at that time. Of course this meant paying the makeup artist and renting a coffin so I could go view and confirm that it was her.

Why worry? Some things are not really worth that much. How many
pioneers were buried next to the trail and a wooden cross thAt might last a
year planted.

I always thought the whole concept was pretty morbid. When the doctor
told my mom was dead, I believed him. I didn't need to see for myself.

The VA conveyed my dad's remains in a cardboard box along with a flag.
It actually worked out fine. It was the same with my mom, sans flag.
We chartered a 6 pack and buried my dad in the gulf with his flag
flying from the tuna tower. My mom went off the dock behind her home.

My sister was sort of amazed that I had her ashes in some antique
cookie jar when she got down here. Evidently I was supposed to know it
was some kind of special family heirloom. I told her, what is more
special than mom?
I planned on burying the whole thing but she took the cookie jar home.
I think the whole secret about the jar went to the grave with my
sister because there were cookies in the jar the last time I was up
there. I just smiled.

That's what they insisted on. Wife worked with the wife of one of the funeral directors where her mother went. He said he'd identify her mother for her ...no need for viewing etc. Saved almost $2K.
