That Steyr is one homely rifle... :)

That is in the eye of the beholder. Lots of people lust for that star
trek look. I am not a huge bullpup fan but it does make a compact
package. The IWI Tavor is not visually pleasing but it is what you
want if you are clearing West Bank homes and shooting people.

I'm pretty much a "traditionalist" when it comes to firearms whose looks
I like. As I only shoot firearms for fun, "practicality" for a specific
non-fun use doesn't enter into my selection processes.

I tend to agree. I do not own anything with a plastic stock and I
chose the M1A over the AR platform when I was looking at center fire
rifles. It is more accurate but more importantly, it delivers more
energy down range if I ever did start trying to kill Bambi again or
just about any other animal on the continent.

Here's a couple photos. Hope they're viewable:

Looks nice John. It's so unusual to see a rifle with a wooden stock
these days. Does it have an internal box magazine?

Man, that "scope" is mounted high. No, it uses magazines.

Here, Harry. Even chubby cheeks can get a decent weld. I suppose
you'd cut the handle off to mount the sight lower, eh?

In case you think that is the 'exceptional' way of mounting the sight--

On the more modern versions of that "AR" rifle, there is no carry
handle. What there is is a rail mounted on the upper receiver right
above the action and the barrel. If there is a carry handle, it is
removable so a sight can be mounted on a rail. None of the photos in
what you posted show a Mini-14, anyway. I tried out the sight you
bought at a Bass Pro Shop. It is a decent sight for the price.
Interestingly, the firearms sales counters at that store are almost
100 yards away from the other side of the store, so you can easily see
how the sight would perform at that fairly typical distance. I ended
up buying a Vortex sight instead. You pays your money and you makes
your choice.

Yet there are optics designed for authentic AR15's!

Your comment had to do with the height of the sight, if you'll recall.

You showed examples of sights being mounted on top of an AR carry
handle, mounted way up high. On the current versions of that rifle,
the sights are mounted much lower, and for reasons that matter.

Krause, your pretense of omniscience is just that.

Uh, I owned a Colt AR rifle, a fairly good "duplicate" aside from
select fire of what is issued to the military. No carry handle, and if
you wanted additional sights, you mounted them on the rail forward of
the folding rear sight. The photos you posted here of the AR rifle
showed the old style AR with the carry handle.

As I stated originally, you've got that sight on your new rifle
mounted too high. I doubt it matters much for a guy like you, though,
since it is unlikely you could hit a 2' "gong" target at 100 yards.

It's not too high if it's accurate, expert. I have a red-dot scope on
my real Colt AR15 and it's very accurate.

Isn't there a model out now with a forward rail on which you can mount
an optic?

That Steyr is a classic!

Tactical optics tend to be mounted higher than the scope on a varmint
rifle. Different type of optic, different sport, different kind of
shooter and done at a much faster pace.
You are right that AR optics have to be mounted higher because there
is virtually no drop at the comb. That was one thing that prompted the
"handle" (for iron sights)

The "handle" was because the barrel and action are all in line to the the
shoulder. Stops the rise on automatic fire. Was fully automatic, not
select fire when I was in the Air Force. Never got to fire full auto, we
did semiauto. Removes the moment angle.
