thing we could do is lose Korea and let Kim try to perpetuate the lie
with 50 million south Koreans in his camp.

That would work. You can't take knowledge away from the South Koreans.
Problem is, they would pay a heavy humanitarian price.

How much damage would a nuclear war on the peninsula cost in
humanitarian terms?

NK could wreak tremendous havoc on the south with purely conventional arms. That's the big fear, and
the reason we have a 'trip wire' US presence over there. Weapons like the one below can reach Seoul
without NK crossing the DMZ.

I suspect that if NK ever attacked SK with conventional weapons we,
under the Trump administration, would quickly put an end to it without
use of nuclear weapons.

A year ago I wouldn't be so sure.

The problem is time. If we keep a carrier close by, then the south may stand a chance. But the NK
has tremendous numbers of everything. It may be old, but it's 'quantity' that counts with them.

I led a study in 1981, using a computerized wargame. The results were not heartening for the south.
Within four days the north had driven to Seoul. The south loved the analysis because it gave them
more reason to ask for more help.

No, I don't think the north could win, but they could sure create a lot of havoc in a short time.

I have seen a lot of talking about that. China really likes having a
closed society, communist government on their southern border. They
certainly do not want to be backed up against a capitalist juggernaut
like the South.
I imagine they would be OK with a hybrid like Vietnam but that can
only happen if the north would be exposed to an American culture like
South Vietnam brought with them when they were "conquered".
Unfortunately South Korea may be too western for China, even if they
were assimilated into the north.
OTOH the Chinese did accept Hong Kong but that is a very isolated
place.

I am guessing the Chinese are very conflicted on this but they may
feel they have some implied treaty obligations if we attacked the
north. This is where I hope Trump or someone in the west can just make
a deal with the Chinese so we don't have to seek a military solution
because I do not see a "win" in it.

If you have indeed lost that blubber shown in the 20 year old pic,
congrats. Been there, done that and I know it ain't easy. In fact,
after a winter of relative inactivity it's time to lose some again. Not
as bad as I once was but need to drop 10-15 lbs. I was once much

I had an issue that combined a thyroid problem and lower than normal
body temp that fortunately was diagnosed and treated, and as a result,
with exercise, too, I was able to drop a lot of...avoirdupois...

Started off today with 90 minutes in the gym, which was overdoing it
because I was still sore from digging a zillion holes over the weekend
for the zillion plants my wife bought at the nursery. :)

I don't think the crazy fat kid is on the Chinese president's Christmas

I forgot...who is the crazy fat kid...Trump or the North Korean guy? The
descriptor fits both. BTW, I posted a photo of myself in the usual

didn't snarf it up. :)

Not big on my wish list Harry. :-)

Oh, I didn't think you would be that interested in a contemporary photo
of me, but I thought your buddy FlaJim and Herring, both of whom seem to
have masturbatory fantasies about me, would like a snap that isn't close
to 20 years old. In fact, I think it was Herring who dared me to post
one. :)

I'm surprised this is such an issue for them. Their hero, Trump, must
weigh more than 300 pounds.

If you are posting something to show you've lost a lot of weight, you'd best post one of yourself.
Have you also grown a full head of hair since you took a picture of your back door?

So, who is the person with the goat? It's not the person I met at Deale who called himself Harry
Krause!

One of the two old goats in that snap is me. My hair is thin on top, but
I'm not nearly bald. It still covers my head without a comb-over, and I
still get a haircut every three weeks. The first time I saw you at
Deale, I thought you were HIV - positive.
Sadly, you were not.

Ewwww. Got caught on that one. We had to take HIV blood tests in the Army before I got out. Don't
know if they still do that or not. I don't even know if my doctor tests for that during the annual

When Harry saw me at Deale I weighed about the same as I do now, 190 lbs +or- 5. However, I can
understand his thinking when he compared my gut to his!

Actually, for my height 6'3" I'm borderline overweight.

When I went for my first physical at the VA a couple of months ago they
did a full blood work thing and they asked me if I wanted to be checked
for HIV and Hepatitis C as well. I said, "sure, what the hell". As
expected, both were negative. I would have had a lot of explaining to
do to Mrs.E. if they were positive. :-)

As for weight, the doc I saw years ago after losing 60 lbs told me that
those weight charts aren't a "one size, fits all". They're an average.
I am 5'11" and I had dropped to your weight ... 195 lbs. Everyone
thought I was seriously sick and honestly I didn't feel all that much
better despite all the weight loss and after daily cardio exercise and
weight lifting for 6 months. The doc advised me not to lose anymore
weight and, for my build, I could actually gain a little back. I feel
best at about 210.

That was my grandson's graduation from USCG boot camp. He's saluting

or another family member is a Veteran, they invite the vet to return the
salute. My son-in-law was Navy.

Nope. Originally from East Boston ... little Italy .. but moved to the
south shore of MA. I met her in the 6th grade. I moved away to another
town and then to CT. Returned to MA halfway through my senior year and
met up with her again and started dating.

BTW ... the little guy I am holding now owns a liquor store in South
Carolina. That's where Mrs.E is visiting now, visiting him and his

What's the ceremony with the Navy guys?

That was my grandson's graduation from USCG boot camp. He's saluting
his Dad (my son-in-law). It's kinda a cool tradition ... if your father
or another family member is a Veteran, they invite the vet to return the
salute. My son-in-law was Navy.

Very cool tradition. Don't think the Army has anything like it...that I've heard of anyway.

Grandpa can help. A couple years ago I started Virginia 529 programs for the two families kids. Once
over age 70, there is no limit on the amount of the contribution and it's tax deductible (state
tax). With a tax rate of about 6%, that's not bad given that CDs are getting about 1.5% now.

Yeah, we did something similar except we aren't over 70 yet. I forget

In Virginia the max deductible contribution is $4k if under 70. Your state may be different. I am
putting the money into the 'invest' program which invests into mutual funds...Vanguard controlled.
So far they've done very well.

This 529 thing is nice because I can make a contribution and then give them the receipt as a
Christmas gift. As owner, I retain control of how the money gets spent. One grandson started
Virginia Tech this year, so it's come in handy already.
