She was delicious in that Haunted Hotel tv series a couple of years ago. We'll be doing our usual here for Super Bowl night...dinner and a movie. I wouldn't mind seeing the Lady GaGa show, though...maybe it'll show up on youtube I went to the first NFL-AFL championship game, which I vaguely remember as being in 1966 or 1967 on assignment for the newspaper. I didn't know **** about football, really, and I still don't, but I went along with the sports writing team to LA to do quickie interviews of KC area fans who went out to see their team play Green Bay. I was "good" at approaching folks and getting quotes from them. I didn't see that much of the game, but I know the Chiefs were slaughtered. That was the first and last pro football game I watched. I only remember a couple of the players' names from those days, but they were biggies...Bart Starr and Ray Nitschke for Green Bay and Len Dawson for the Chiefs. Years ago while on a business trip (I think late-80's) I was standing in line at the ticket counter at Baltimore International airport. Guy in line in front of me turned around to look at something and I realized it was Johnny Unitas. He was already somewhat hobbled over and moved with some difficulty. I remember looking up stats on him after that indicated he was 6'1" in his playing years. Definitely must have shrunk in retirement because I was almost a head taller than him. My other ancient football memory was from your neck of the woods ... Les Shaw's restaurant. The Detroit Lions and the New York Giants were in town to play an annual pre-season exhibition game. I worked at Les Shaw's at the time as a busboy and the owner invited me to have breakfast on game day with the Lions who had reserved the place for the pre-game meal. Sat between Joe Don Looney and some other huge player who's name I can't remember. The Albee Booth game. I never went to one. Went to les Shaw's once...too expensive for a teenager and his date. We went to jimmies or chuck's or al's or Pepe's. Whoops. Albe, not Albee. I was thinking of Edward Albee. You should be congratulated for your remarkable behavior this afternoon. You were very gentlemanly. Kind of nice, isn't it? |

The John flushes his head...
"You should be congratulated for your remarkable behavior this afternoon. You were very gentlemanly. Kind of nice, isn't it?" Why would you feel the need to say that? Wait a minute...it's Sunday when you love to ramp up your instigating and agitating. |

My best sport thing was meeting Mickey Mantle in the O'Hare American Airlines VIP bar. It was Mick, another guy and me at a high top. We were there for about an hour before it was time for our planes. The other guy was a baseball nut and they did most of the talking. It was interesting tho for a young kid like me. (~22). I grew up watching the Yankees murder the Washington Senators. He was just retired and pondering what was next. He had lots of people offering him stuff. In those days the drinks were free in the VIP bar and we took advantage of it. Mick was a drinking man ;-) I also got a couple of minutes with Billy Kilmer and Sonny Jurgenson in a bar in Alexandria when they recognized the girl I was with (old friend) and called us over but that was just your typical "how you doing" sort of conversation. They were both **** faced too. Seems to be a pattern there. |
