Are K-cups evil for the environment?

I understand they are manna from heaven for yuppies but it seems to me
coffee in a non recyclable and non biodegradable single shot package
is not where the current generation should be going.

I have a couple of reusable stainless steel k-cups I put my preferred
choice of coffee into. I get the coffee I like, there's nothing really
to recycle, and it is much less expensive per cup.

Not a single tree was cut down to make a k-cup.

Couldn't talk the wife out of a Keurig so I found the 545 model on sale at Costco. It came with the stainless reusable cup so I can use the Folgers coffee I'm used to.
She likes experimenting with various flavors but I tend to mostly stick with what I like.
Also got the stainless steel carafe but haven't used it yet.

They do make recycle type kcups now. One of the reasons I do not have a
k-cup brewer is the trash generated.

I agree. I ended up with a Senseo pod machine that has a filter cup so
we can use the fresh ground coffee we like. There was some discussion
about whether I should have gone with the K cup machine tho.

Trees are an agricultural product and the ultimate renewable resource.

.... but if you cut a K cup open, you will see a paper filter in there
so what you say is not really true. That is also what makes them not
viable for recycling. It costs more to separate the paper filter, the
used coffee and foil cover from the plastic, than scrap plastic is
worth. If you were really serious about economically viable recycling,
you would peel the cover off, throw that in with your aluminum and
chuck the rest of the cup in the trash. At a certain point all of that
takes away the convenience of the cup in the first place.

The last time I was at Costco, they had Folgers in K cups.

I just drink more coffee than that. This is for my wife to make an
evening cup of decaf. The machine we have can either make one cup or
12. A cup of coffee for me is 20 oz.

They have them up here but usual price is just over 50 cents a cup vs Folgers 920 gram tubs which supposedly give you 200 cups at $ 6.99 on sale at Wal*Mart. A tiny fraction of the cost if you don't mind cleaning that little reusable pod.

I have a Crusinart 10 cup thermal carafe maker. Works great. Since the
carafe is thermal, do not get burnt coffee, and can nuke the stuff the next
day to get hot coffee.

You have Wal-Mart up there now? That's progress. Who cares about
cost. Keurig is all about fresh coffee no mess, rapid brew, and
convenience? You get none of the above the way you do
it.

Buy the beans. Store them in a reuseable sack. Grind them
yourself. Use a percolator or french press. Use tap water. Enjoy
the fresh brewed coffee and use the grounds for fertilizer.
Doesn't get any more eco friendly than that.

We've probably had a Wall Mart before you did. One is within walking distance of my house and the next closest is about a 10 minute drive away.
Numerous others within the metropolitan area.

....and D'uh..as far as the Keurig, that's why I resisted the wife for as long as I could. Everytime we visited my sisters, she'd be going on about the virtues of their machines.

We do most of that. I chuck the grounds and the paper filter in the
trash that gets burned in the waste to energy plant. The water comes
from the RO but that waste water goes into the pool.
I was really just addressing the yuppies who carry their Ecoli laden
cloth bags to the store in their Prius and then buy a big box of
K-cups.
