We've also had great weather the last two days with light winds and mid day temperatures approaching 70 degrees. We're docked tonight in a commercial fishing harbor called Matane that offers little in the way of conventional amenities but is interesting nevertheless. They dropped us off in a container port in Guatemala. Most of the people just stayed on the ship. We are a little more adventurous and we took a navy boat over to a Best Western across the bay and then went for a hike in the rain forest behind the "hotel" (actually just a bunch of cabins and a restaurant) It was one of the coolest excursions we ever took on a cruise. The town itself is pretty under whelming, They tried to set up a straw market for the cruise people but it was not Nassau or anything. The people were very friendly tho and it would have been hard to spend $20. We had just a $5 beer at the best Western and when we got another in town and handed the lady a $10, she was wondering if I wanted to buy her house. I let her keep the change and she gave me a hat. http://gfretwell.com/ftp/Best%20Western%20Guatemala.jpg I have a picture around here somewhere (not on my computer) of Judy standing next to a kid with a machine gun. |

Glad to hear all is well again. Have you done any RV factory tours? You can learn a lot about construction. Yeah, the trip to Indiana was an 'Open Range Homecoming'. The factory is in Shipsewanna, and they provide service personnel to fix problems with the rigs at the campgrounds. Many events are set up, one being the factory tour. You're right, a lot can be learned there. This year they installed new shades in the living/dining area, replaced a broken cable holder under a slideout, replaced and upgraded the molding around the bottom of the gooseneck, and a few other small things - all free. It's a very worthwhile trip, as was last year's. However, next year it's scheduled at the same time as the Gettysburg Bluegrass Festival. We have a great site at the festival, and would lose it if we went to Shipsewanna. So, we'll probably not go and hope we can make it for the 2018 rally. |

I lived in Michigan for three years, north of Detroit in Southfield and then Bloomfield Hills. Got around the state a bit, and got to stay at a lodge in the U.P. twice. Coldest day in my life up to that point was a January day in Grand Rapids attending a state Dem party convention. Did financial/political PR at a big agency. Had great clients - state NEA, American Motors, Motown, Hudson's Department Stores, UAW, and a big national mortgage banker. Met Walter Reuther a few times, and even Jimmy Hoffa. Got seconded to a Dem gubernatorial race there and then got hired by the national NEA and sent to NY State. Fun days. |

Glad to hear all is well again. We are going to be north of you next week and the week after that. We are heading for northern Michigan I spent a week plus every August for 10 years in northern Indiana, teaching a writing class. The campus was beautiful, but the weather was always really hot and really muggy. Never liked Indiana much, before, during, or since. That's good. I'm glad to hear it. |

(perhaps another planet) We are going to up around the corner from Traverse City in lake country. My wife found us a nice house on a lake. Ahh. Fun days. Yeah, right. Was all this before or after Vietnam and your two trips around Cape Horn? |

My wife really wants to spend more time and do more of a traveling trip some day but this time she just wants to relax and visit the kids. |

My wife went up to northern Minnesota for a 'girl trip', and they always come back with a can full of agates. But, that's on the Lake Superior shores, not Lake Michigan. |
