Ahh, but my primary purpose in having a few firearms is to participate
in target shooting. At one point, there were two morons here who
threatened physical violence, so I "gunned up" and got a carry permit,
but those morons -the crazy guy from the Pacific Rim who lived in Canada
and nutball Scotty from Connecticut- seem to have disappeared.
If we had a home invasion here and we somehow weren't warned by the
security system, I probably could get to a sidearm or shotgun in time to
defend us. If thugs trip the property lights at night or the perimeter
alarms, there's no question I'd have time to grab a firearm. I certainly
wouldn't hesitate to fire into the center of body mass of a home
invader. My "trusty" S&W revolver would do the job, and I wouldn't need
more than six rounds.
That is why I have a big dog. If the bad guy gets in and the dog does
not wake me up, I am shooting the dog first ;-)
If I am going to take armed self defense seriously, I think I need to
train. Otherwise I would not have the gun in the first place. The only
thing worse than being unarmed is to make a mistake and arm your
attacker. Hence I learned retention techniques and train from that
position. Most of the crap you see on TV is what you hope the bad guy
will do, so you can take his gun away.
We don't have a big crime problem in our county. We also have two cops
and a secret service agent living in our little subdivision, and the
cops park their patrol cars in their driveways.
