I do have hundreds of tunes from the '50s and '60s plus favorites up till about 5 or 6 years ago loaded on my older iPod that connects through the Highlander stereo. Always use that on highway trips over an hour in duration.

I had PCs in my cars for years but when all of my socket 7 boards
stopped working I bit the bullet and bought real MP3 players to
replace the factory radio. I still miss the PCs
Newer faster PCs don't seem to be able to tolerate the Florida heat as
well. A P4 machine gave up the ghost pretty fast. It would not start
up until the car cooled down.
I really wish I could find a player, hardware or software that works
as well as the DOS based MPXPLAY. I real;ly like the idea of using a
numeric pad to select songs, jukebox style. All of the players in the
house run MPXPLAY. Attila the Hungarian has written a version that
runs natively under XP but it is still basically a DOS program,
written in C. It is free.

Sirius is a pain in the ass. They give you a free 3 month subscription
or something when you buy a new, Sirus equipped vehicle
and then hound the bananas out of you to set it up and subscribe.

I had a Sirius subscription way back when they first started and
took advantage of a "free" lifetime offer for $300. They seem to
have lost records of that.

I unsubscribed from all their emails. Don't need it. I figured out
how to pair my cell phone via Bluetooth and downloaded the Nissan app
that allows me to go on-line in the car. Subscribed to the free
version of Pandora. That's good enough in addition to local radio.

I mostly listen to one of our classical stations around here, or NPR,
and if I am "on the road," either find a local classical station or
listen to some of the 40 gigs of music on my iphone. Last time I drove
to Hilton Head, I listened to all nine of the Beethoven symphonies in
order, and played solely on the piano. It was a wonderful and
educational experience.

I'd fall asleep at the wheel.

Ditto, with straight piano music. Scroll this over to 25:00, get a bit of volume, and
tell me you could sleep.

Jason Isbell has a pretty good cover of Mutineer.

You need a Panasonic Toughbook. Huge numbers of them are riding
around in police cars in full sun. Purchased off-lease, prices are
fairly reasonable.

Bound to be so much better than Leonard Bernstein and the Vienna Philharmonic.

Not better than a full orchestra version, but certainly different. Franz
Lizst did the transcriptions and arrangements for solo piano, and they
certain are a tour de force. The piano versions reveal much about how
Beethoven structured his masterpieces and how certain themes make many
appearances, sometimes transposed. The pianist on the set I own is
Konstantin Scherbakov.
Here he is on another Beethoven piece.

Played with an orchestra, there's not much finer music than Beethoven's Piano
Concerto No. 5. Saw it performed by the NSO back when Rostropovich was conducting.

That is not a horrible idea but when I have looked into laptop
solutions in the past, I have trouble finding them that support any
kind of remote power on and off.
The PCs I was using had the option to power on after a power failure
(key off)

Yes, most desk top PCs can be set up do do that. It's important to
remember however that laptops have sort of a built in UPS function as
long as the battery is good. Even a marginal battery will get you
through most power blips.

Country has become much more listenable in recent years as it has
moved away from the "twang a billy" style of the 50s and 60s.

If it doesn't come on with the key and go off with the key, it is not
useful to me. My MP3 players all do that, PC or not.
